Greenfield, Indiana, is a small community in central Indiana with a population of just over 23,000 as of the 2020 census.
It's a nice, quiet little place with a genuine sense of community, and this definitely comes into play during the autumn season.
There are numerous historically significant places all over town.
Pictured above is the James Whitcomb Riley House, which was the birthplace and home of the author during his childhood. Other historic places of note include the Charles Barr House as well as the Greenfield Courthouse Square Historic District.
Come autumn, though, all of these places suddenly come ablaze with color.
A fall visit to Greenfield is never complete without doing a few tours of these historic places, all of which just look so much nicer surrounded by golds and reds.
In October, the town hosts the annual Riley Festival, a must-do for every local and must-travel for every other Hoosier.
More than 460 vendors and exhibitors will gather at the old courthouse for four days to celebrate the transitional season. One of the author's poems is selected every year as the theme; this year (2024) the theme is "A Barefoot Boy". Time your trip to Greenwood for October 3-6, 2024, and plan to attend! This is one awesome little fall festival in Indiana you can't miss.
Can't do the festival? No worries - check out some of Greenfield's other wonderful attractions made all the better with some autumn magic.
