Among our favorite natural wonders in Indiana are the amazing caves that call this little state home, and you can explore them yourself! It's true - do the amazing Indiana cave trail ASAP and explore four truly incredible underground wonderlands that will spark your imagination and make you wonder about the amazing world around us. Never been caving in Indiana? No worries - the Indiana Cave Trail is an excellent way to dip your toes in. You can do it all in a day (which is cool, but we strongly recommend taking your time on this one), or you can spread it out over a year. Indiana might be thought of most commonly as a place that's relatively flat, with some hills and prairies and the occasional really, really epic state park.
Of course, this isn't all there is to see in the Hoosier State; there's an entirely different world underneath it all, and that's where the epic Indiana Cave Trail comes in. What better way to explore Indiana than by climbing around within it?
There are four caves on the Cave Trail: Squire Boone Caverns, Bluespring Caverns, Indiana Caverns, and Marengo Cave.
You can begin your adventure at any of the four; you'll want to pick up your passport at the cave, and then you'll want to make sure you get it stamped at each cave.
Each cave is worth exploring for totally different reasons; Bluespring Caverns, for one, is an enormous underground river that allows you to explore via boat.
You'll want to dress warm and be ready to get wet; some of the passages can be narrow and those with claustrophobia might find these adventures to be less than relaxing. Personally, we think they're about as exciting as it gets! It's not every day you get to explore amazing natural cave systems - especially in Indiana. Bluespring Caverns is one of those places you'll want to return to time and time again.
Indiana Caverns is Indiana's longest cave, where you'll be able to spot bones and remains of animals who lived way back in the Ice Age.
Here, you can do a walking tour, a deep, dark cave tour, explore underground lakes, and so much more. Indiana Caverns is one of those places you could quite literally make an entire day out of - if not longer. Plus, you can't miss all the fun there is to be had above ground, too!
Marengo Cave is a designated National Landmark and holds the title of the "most visited" natural attraction in Indiana.
We're not surprised by this; Marengo Cave is truly otherworldly despite being nestled deep within our own little world right here in the Midwest. Do one (or both) of two guided tours, and learn all about Indiana's karst landscapes.
Finally, there's Squire Boone Caverns, a rugged adventure deep underground we don't think you'll ever want to leave.
Filled top to bottom with tons of pioneer and natural history, Squire Boone Caverns is an adventure you can do solo or with the whole family (okay, all of these caves are, but still). Explore millions of years of history deep in this cave, with lots to learn along the way and plenty of amazing stops to make.
