With a Farmer’s Market, 15 Lakes, and a Seasonal Festival, There’s Nothing Like a Summer Weekend in This Illinois Town

Fox Lake in Illinois offers a perfect summer getaway with its numerous lakes, rivers, and vibrant community events.

There's nothing quite like summertime in the Midwest. Illinois has great outdoor activities and adorable small towns to visit for a day of exploration or a weekend getaway. Since we only get about three months of warmth and sunshine, we truly make the most out of the time we have. And if you're looking for the perfect small town in Illinois for summer, you may need to look no further than Fox Lake.

Fox Lake, known as the "Heart of the Chain O'Lakes," is a small waterfront village in Northern Illinois with about 11,000 residents. Due to its fantastic location in the Chain O'Lakes region, life in Fox Lake is centered around the area's 15 lakes and 45 miles of rivers — features unseen in most other parts of the state.

Located just an hour north of Chicago (and accessible by Metra train) or about an hour south of Milwaukee, Fox Lake is the perfect place for a fun-packed getaway. The tiny waterfront town is a destination for those looking for the ultimate summer vacation. Fox Lake is also nestled next to Chain O'Lakes State Park, which offers an unprecedented concentration of natural waterways in Illinois, camping, hiking trails, fishing, picnicking, and much more.

Each year, Fox Lake hosts several summer events, like the annual cardboard boat races and an art market. On Friday nights, live music and entertainment make their way to the Community Garden Green as part of the town's Friday Night Concert series. Another must-do is the Celebrate Fox Lake Fourth of July celebration, which showcases a community parade, car show, lakefront festival, and a brilliant fireworks display over the water.

Another favorite summertime activity is the town's farmers' market, open every Tuesday from June through September from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 17 E School Ct. Here, you'll find a variety of fresh fruit, veggies, baked goods, and handmade gifts from local farms and vendors.

Of course, even just a day of walking around exploring the town will pay off in summer fun. Start your day with a fresh cup of Joe at The Coffee Shop located at 21 W. Grand Ave. Pro tip: Grab a seat on the patio for a view of the gorgeous lake.

You may also want to check out Dockers Restaurant, featuring American cuisine and a Friday night fish fry with dockside seating, or grab a thin-crust pie from Moretti's Ristorante & Pizzeria. Yum! To me, Fox Lake, Illinois, seems like the perfect small town for summertime adventure, food, and fun.
