This underrated state park is one of the most beautiful places to visit if you love nature. Views of endless water, crashing waves, beaches, and diverse landscapes abound. There are also many trails to enjoy at this 4,160-acre park.

2. Matthiessen State Park

This 1,700-acre state park sits along the Illinois River on the north side of the state and is known for its waterfalls and hiking trails. Guests enter a whole new world when they visit this stunning place that not every Illinoisan knows exists.

3. Mississippi Palisades State Park

Giant rock formations are the main natural feature at this park in addition to the river. Situated at the confluence of the Mississippi and Apple rivers in northwestern Illinois, this park is full of trails that take guests past scenic views.

4. Cave-In-Rock State Park

Whether you're looking for buried treasure, nature, or history, you may actually find all three here. This southern Illinois area spans about 240 acres and sits right on the Ohio River. The park sits atop high bluffs overlooking the water.

Spanning about 2,300 acres of the Rock River Valley, this park features river bluffs, forestry, and the Black Hawk statue. It is situated in northern Illinois and is popular at any time of the year.

7. Garden Of The Gods Recreation Area

A section of the Shawnee National Forest, this natural area is known for its huge rock formations that have been shaped by wind over time. This is the most popular area of the Shawnee, and it spans about 3,300 acres.

8. Starved Rock State Park

With 13 miles of trails, this popular state park is situated on the Illinois River on the north side of the state. It features rock formations, canyons, waterfalls, and many other incredible natural attractions that keep guests coming back year after year.
