Experience Idaho’s Best Natural Wonders in Two Days With This Road Trip Route
Day 1
Start your adventure bright and early at the magnificent Mesa Falls. Take a short walk along the scenic path to get different viewpoints of both the Upper and Lower Mesa Falls. As you stand before the Upper Mesa Falls, you'll feel the mist on your face and hear the thunderous roar of water cascading 114 feet into the Snake River Canyon. Don't forget to snap a few photos – these falls are absolutely Instagram grid-worthy.
Before hitting the road, stop by the Mesa Falls Visitor Center to learn about the area's fascinating geology and history. It's a great way to deepen your appreciation for the natural wonders you'll be experiencing throughout your trip.
After leaving Mesa Falls, take in the scenic drive toward Idaho Falls, arriving just in time for lunch at The SnakeBite Restaurant. This local favorite has been serving up delicious food and drinks since 1994. Try one of their signature gourmet burgers, like the Grand Teton Burger, or opt for a flavorful chicken sandwich. The lively atmosphere and exceptional service make it the perfect spot to refuel before continuing your journey.
Following lunch, drive south to explore the Thousand Springs Scenic Byway, a 67-mile route that highlights some of Idaho's most remarkable geology and natural beauty. Stop at Box Canyon State Park for a short hike along the Box Canyon Springs Trail, where you'll marvel at the aquamarine waters of the springs and crystal-clear pools emerging from volcanic rock.
As you continue along the byway, you’ll see springs gushing from canyon walls, forming a stunning sequence of waterfalls. The cascading water paints a breathtaking scene, showcasing the unique geological wonders of southern Idaho.
Where to Stay
As the day winds down, make your way to Twin Falls. Book two nights at The Fillmore Inn, a charming bed-and-breakfast with great amenities and excellent reviews. This Tudor-style inn offers a relaxing atmosphere after a day of exploration, with cozy rooms and a peaceful setting that perfectly complements your adventure.
Day 2
Start your second day with a beautiful drive to Craters of the Moon National Monument. As you approach, you might think you've accidentally driven onto the set of a sci-fi movie. The black, volcanic landscape stretches as far as the eye can see, punctuated by bizarre rock formations and hidden lava tubes.
Take a drive along the seven-mile loop road (open seasonally, typically from late spring through early fall), stopping to explore the surreal Devil's Orchard and to climb to the top of Big Cinder Butte for panoramic vistas. If you're feeling adventurous and visiting during the open season, grab a flashlight and venture into Indian Tunnel, an 800-foot long lava tube that'll make you feel like a real-life explorer.
Return to Twin Falls for lunch at Elevation 486. This restaurant boasts unmatched views of the Snake River Canyon along with delicious local cuisine. Try the Idaho trout or savor a juicy steak while taking in the breathtaking scenery.
End your trip with a visit to Perrine Coulee Falls, a hidden gem in the Snake River Canyon where you can experience something truly unique – a walk behind the falls! The short hike to get there is well worth it, rewarding you with epic views and a refreshing mist from the rushing falls.
If you still have time, take the opportunity to explore more of Twin Falls. A visit to Shoshone Falls, often called the "Niagara of the West," is a must. At 212 feet tall, it’s even higher than Niagara Falls.
Afterward, head back to The Fillmore Inn for your second night. Relax in the inviting atmosphere, enjoy the private patio, or read a book in the cozy living room. It’s the perfect way to reflect on your Idaho road trip before heading home tomorrow.
