The Most Beautiful Town on Kauai Is Behind a One-Lane Bridge

The Hawaiian Islands are home to some of our favorite small towns in the U.S. We love visiting places like Hana, Haleiwa, and Holualoa. But you can never forget the charming, small, and remote town of Hanalei. Located on Kauai's north shore, this town will immediately impress you with its beauty. However, there’s so much more to see and do here than bask and admire. From its history and art to its outdoor activities and friendly community, it’s a place that's easy to love—we simply can’t get enough of it.

Hanalei is a town on the northern shore of Kauai, just west of Princeville. To reach this destination, you’ll need to drive over a one-lane bridge. Be patient as you make the trek to this remote Hawaiian town, as the vehicles in each direction must take turns crossing the bridge.

When you first arrive, you’ll be greeted with a friendly, laid-back community. Park your car and visit the locally owned cafes and shops. Hanalei is also known for its art galleries and studios, where you’ll see incredible masterpieces, including carvings made from rare Hawaiian wood.

However, the big draw to this Island town is its remarkable natural beauty. Hanalei is known for its breathtaking beaches, lush forests, and beautiful blue waters. Hanalei Beach is one of the most popular beaches on Kauai. This is a prime location for surfing, as well as snorkeling, kayaking, and even swimming. You don’t even need to get into the water to enjoy a day at this beach, as it's easy to get lost in the view surrounding you.

Located on Hanalei Bay is the historic Hanalei Pier, a popular gathering destination since 1892, and a place that may look familiar as it was in the film "South Pacific." This is a great spot to take a few pictures of the bay, mountains, and ocean. This pier dates back to the late 1800s when it was a rice and sugar transportation hub. Today, you can spend some time near the pier and enjoy sunset views, as these are some of the best on the Island. Keep in mind, however, that the pier can become quite crowded, especially around holidays and over the weekend. Weekday visits may be best if you don't want to share your space.

The Hanalei Pier is just the beginning of the historic places in this remote Hawaiian town. Visit the Wai’oli Mission House, a historic landmark where you can learn more about the interactions between the Hawaiians and missionaries in the 1800s.

If you want to get out and explore this area on Kauai, spend some time at the Hanalei Valley Lookout. This gorgeous overlook is where you can bask in the full beauty of the valley and Hanalei Bay. You can also spot the taro fields that surround the town. Even better, this view can be seen right from the highway, so you don’t have a long hike to tackle.

Although, if you do want to put on your hiking shoes and go on an adventure, consider the Hanalei River Trail, which takes you along the ridge behind town. This trail is a bit of a climb and nearly 3 miles long, but it gives you the opportunity to immerse yourself in Mother Nature's creations.

From its shops and art galleries to its natural beauty and historical sites, Hanalei, Hawaii, is worth exploring. It’s a town that we simply can’t get enough of, and after a single day, we bet you can’t either. It’s paradise.
