Explore Kihei, a Walkable City in Hawaii Famous for Whale Watching

You can easily experience long walks on the beach when you visit Kihei, Hawaii. This small city on Maui is a slice of paradise.

There is no doubt that Maui is the ultimate vacation destination. This beautiful island is home to attractions like the Hana Highway and Haleakala National Park. It is also home to some of our favorite small towns like Makawao and Pa’ia. However, located on Maui’s southwest shore is a beautiful small city that checks off all the boxes — it’s the perfect escape. It is home to gorgeous beaches, excellent food and drinks, and some of the best whale watching opportunities on the islands. It is Kihei, a walkable city that you’ll immediately love.

Kihei is the type of place you’ll never want to leave. It is located in the sunniest area of Maui and was once a regular vacation destination for Hawaiian royalty. Today, it is home to over 22,000 people and various shops and restaurants. You can spend plenty of time walking through town and exploring — there is something for everyone here. However, Kihei is best known for its beaches and whale-watching opportunities. If you are like me, you'll want to spend all of your time by the water.

You can discover what long walks along the beach mean as Kihei offers up to six miles of breathtaking, pristine beaches. Kamaole Beach Parks I, II, and III are some of the most popular beaches in town, perfect for swimming and snorkeling. You may also want to add Keawakapu Beach to your itinerary, as you are less likely to experience heavy winds here, and Charley Young Beach features more shallow water, making swimming a little easier for those with young families.

And while there is nothing quite like soaking up the sun, dipping your toes into the sand, and wading in the blue water, you’ll want to watch for wildlife splashing in the ocean. Kihei is known for whale watching and is home to the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary Visitor Center. Located right along the beach, this visitor center is where you can learn more about the majestic creatures in the ocean, view exhibits, enjoy interactive displays, and even participate in various programs for the entire family.

If you are up for an adventure, I recommend booking one of the Maui whale watching tours that depart from Kihei. And if you aren't feeling that brave, spend time sitting along the beach, looking out — you never know what you may spot breaching the ocean’s surface.

For even easier access to the beaches of Kihei, consider booking a vacation rental right by the shore. This beachfront townhouse Airbnb is the perfect basecamp as it sits next to the ocean and comes with a long list of amenities, including a large kitchen, beautiful lawn, and ocean views from many rooms throughout the home. Plus, this vacation rental comfortably sleeps up to six guests, allowing you to easily bring your family to this Hawaiian city.

Kihei, Hawaii, has so much to love, but the breathtaking beaches and whale watching opportunities are certainly at the top of the list. But if you're looking for more to do in paradise, be sure to visit our itinerary planner for nearby recommendations!
