The Spontaneous Road Trip Through Georgia That Is the Perfect Weekend of Adventure

Gas up the car for this spontaneous weekend road trip in Georgia, featuring scenic routes and quirky stops, perfect for a quick and unforgettable getaway.

I think I speak for most people when I say we'd all love to escape every now and then, but a lengthy getaway might not be in our immediate stars. That’s where this spontaneous weekend road trip in Georgia comes in. As you wind through scenic coastal towns to charming and historic destinations to mysterious places, and more, you’ll realize this quick trip in Georgia is just what you needed to inspire more of your wanderlust. Luckily, we have plenty of attractions in our backyards, making the logistics of planning a Georgia road trip itinerary a breeze.

Why This Is the Perfect Weekend Road Trip in Georgia

We've put together one of the best road trips in Georgia that can be easily accomplished in a weekend. The trip starts (and ends) near the beautiful coastal city of Savannah. You’ll be stopping at several hidden gem destinations offering something for everyone. Kids, solo travelers, couples, families, and friends will find something to remember on this trip.

In all, it covers approximately 445 miles and requires about 7.5 hours of driving, making it a great option for a quick two-day adventure. Check out the full itinerary on Google Maps. I like that it's customizable, so you can add or remove stops if you like (and I recommend that you do!).

1. Glazed and Confused, Tybee Island

alt

Your first stop is Glazed and Confused, a cute pottery studio in a delightful little collection of shops on Tybee Island, just off Savannah's coast. This paint-your-own pottery studio has more than 100 items to choose from, and the staff is super friendly! It's a wonderful activity, especially if you're visiting with kids. The outdoor patio tables are perfect for enjoying the island breeze on a warm day, though there are inside seats if it's raining.

Carve out about two hours for this activity, and since it will take a few days for your painted pottery to be glazed and "fired," you can pick it up when you get back from your quick weekend trip. Make an early reservation for around 10 a.m., when the studio opens.

2. Pinball Palace, Brunswick

From the pottery studio, take the scenic drive along I-95 south for about 90 miles to your next stop in Brunswick. This is another of my favorite destinations in the Golden Isles: the Pinball Palace. This spot will make you feel like a kid again. It's an arcade with dozens of pinball machines, all set to free play, so you don't have to pay a dime (or a quarter) once you pay the hourly play rate. All of the machines are in pristine condition, and it's so much fun to walk around and listen to the beeps and buzzes and see all the glowing lights.

If you're traveling with little ones who don't care for pinball, there's a small kid zone area for kids 10 and under with bouncy houses, an air hockey table, and playground equipment. Spend about two hours or so here, which is enough time to play lots of games. It's easy to see why so many people love this award-winning pinball arcade in Georgia.

3. Historic Strand Dinner Cinema, Jesup

Once you've played pinball until you've filled your heart's desire, finish up your first night of this weekend road trip near Savannah with a visit to Jesup's Strand Cinema, about 40 miles from Brunswick. This historic theater is decorated in a fun Art Deco style and has leather recliners with personal tables. You'll be served freshly-cooked bistro food delivered right to your seat, and alcohol is available for purchase as well. New releases play here, and you can occasionally catch classic films on the schedule, too.

After all that exploring, it's likely you're getting tired, and Jesup makes for a great stopping point. This small city of around 10,000 has a few vacation rental options and hotels where you can rest and recover before your next day of adventure.

4. Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park, Macon

We'll start day two of this road trip off with a bit of history at the fascinating Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park in Macon. This amazing site features 3,300 well-preserved acres that include ceremonial mounds built over a thousand years ago by Native Americans who once lived here. The visitor center has an archaeology museum displaying some of the artifacts that have been excavated from the mounds over the years.

The best part? This park is free, and you can hike the trails in Ocmulgee Mounds Park and get close-up views of the historical sites here. History buffs, this is the place for you. The park opens at 8 a.m., so start early to avoid the heat if you're here in the summer. You could easily spend several hours at the site exploring, and you can have a picnic as well.

5. Graveface Museum, Savannah

For the last leg of this trip, let's head back to Savannah. You'll be driving through the countryside through several of our smallest Georgia towns, including Danville, Montrose, and Dudley. It wouldn't be a bad idea to stop for a few minutes to see these quieter corners of Georgia. Plus, it breaks up the two and a half hours trip back to the city.

Once in Savannah, visit the wacky Graveface Museum. This is one of the strangest attractions in Georgia, with exhibits on serial killers, traveling circuses, taxidermied animals, and clowns ...OH MY! This will be a fun stop for anyone who enjoys the mysterious and darker side of life. It's definitely something different. The museum charges a fee, and it's open until 7 p.m., which gives you enough time for a tour to check out all the oddities.

If you want to see more of the Peachtree State, check out this adventure where you can explore more of Georgia in one trip. I think a road trip is the best way to see the hidden gems in the state that are tucked away inside our towns and cities. And this weekend trip highlights a few of my favorites. I hope that you discover more of our best-kept secrets while on this spontaneous weekend road trip in Georgia.
