The Small Town in Georgia That Comes Alive in the Fall Season

Is there any better place to be than Georgia in the fall? We think not! Our state is rich in mountain views, autumn-friendly hiking trails, seasonal festivals, and, of course, a healthy dose of fall foliage. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, you’ll find autumn inspiration everywhere you go. It’s by far my favorite season, and if you're like me and eager to explore the Peach State this time of year, I’ve got the perfect destination for you.

I highly recommend visiting a small town in Georgia that comes alive in the fall season: Ellijay. To start, it's Georgia's apple capital! But those who take the time to uncover all that this region of the state has to offer will discover the nooks and crannies of what makes this town so enchanting this time of year. So, let's start exploring!

As the season changes from the sun-soaked days of summer to cooler weather, I enjoy nothing more than an enticing escape to the mountains. There’s something about misty mornings and the quiet stillness that soothes my soul. Luckily, we have many small mountain towns in Georgia brimming with autumn glory. Here in Ellijay, you can find exactly that and more. Just 80 miles north of Atlanta, this charming community has everything we love about the cozy season, making it the perfect destination for a fall day trip in Georgia. 

For starters, you'll need to experience the town's claim to fame: apples. A drive down Route 52, also known as Apple Alley, will reveal a treasure trove of everyone's favorite fall fruit. Some of the must-visit orchards include Red Apple Barn, Hillcrest Orchards, and B.J. Reece Orchards. Here, you can treat yourself and your family to delicious fall favorites, including apple cider donuts, caramel apples, apple pies, apple fritters, and more. The kids will especially enjoy the fun fall activities at these orchards, and you could easily spend an entire day basking in all the festivities.

Of course, you can't miss the Georgia Apple Festival, which takes place in Ellijay every October. The four-day festival is a great way for folks to gather and celebrate the culture and heritage of the town. Expect local vendors selling handmade goods, music, and live entertainment for all to enjoy. If you ask me, this is the fall event in north Georgia you don’t want to miss. 

Looking for pumpkins? You'll find plenty of those, too. Some excellent pumpkin patches near Ellijay include the Red Apple Barn and Burt's Pumpkin Farm. There's just something so enchanting about spending fall days outside, enjoying all the finest produce the season has to offer. Be sure to carve out time to snap your pictures for your fall collection.

And speaking of the great outdoors, no trip to Ellijay is complete without at least one fall foliage hike. Some of the best outdoor attractions nearby include Amicalola Falls State Park, Springer Mountain, and Carter's Lake. I particularly love scenic drives through the area. The sweeping views of the countryside illuminated by the glow of reds, oranges, and golden hues are what fall dreams are made of. Well, at least mine are.

One thing's for sure: between the glowing landscapes, the festivities, and the seasonal treats, this is one small town in Georgia that you'll quickly fall in love with during the autumn season. But truly -- there's no wrong time of year to visit Ellijay!
