If You Only Have One Day To Visit This Small Town in Georgia, Here’s Everything You Absolutely Can’t Miss

Make the most of your one-day trip to Plains, Georgia with key attractions, Main Street boutiques, and nearby natural wonders.

Spending just one day in a new town can feel overwhelming—there’s so much to see and do, from hikes to local restaurants, museums, and attractions. For me, the best way to get a feel for any small town in Georgia is to stroll down Main Street. That’s where the community comes alive—mom-and-pop shops, local businesses, and the small, everyday details that make each place unique. It’s here you’ll see local pride on full display and realize that sometimes the simplest experiences are the most memorable.

Georgia has no shortage of charming small towns, but Plains is one that stands out. If you only have a day to spend here, you might be wondering how to make the most of your time. I’ve mapped out the essential stops so you can enjoy a full day in this quaint southwestern Georgia town.

Why Plains Is the Ultimate Georgia Day Trip

Plains sits about 150 miles south of Atlanta, close enough to visit and still return to the city in one day. With around 500 residents, this close-knit town is full of welcoming locals and Southern charm.

Though rooted in agriculture, with farms still growing peanuts, cotton, corn, and soybeans, Plains is best known as the hometown of Jimmy Carter, the 39th U.S. President and Nobel Peace Prize winner. So, how should you spend a single day here?

A day in Plains can be both fun and educational. You can dive into its history, browse the boutiques along Main Street, and enjoy outdoor activities if that’s your thing. Here are the best things to do in Plains if you only have one day.

Begin Your Morning at the Plains Welcome Center

Start your day at the Plains Visitor's Center. Located on the edge of town just off Highway 280, the center sits on a 17-acre property featuring a tranquil pond, butterfly gardens, and a picnic area. It’s a great place to learn about the town’s history and President Jimmy Carter through the dedicated exhibits. Be sure to carve out a few minutes to explore the butterfly gardens, which honor Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter. The visitor center isn’t just a place for souvenirs—it’s a reflection of the charm, pride, and beauty of Plains itself.

Discover Local History at the Jimmy Carter National Historic Park

The Jimmy Carter National Historic Park is a must-visit attraction in Plains. The family-friendly site includes Carter’s childhood home and farm, as well as the Plains High School Visitor Center, where Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter went to school. The Plains Depot, which served as the headquarters for Carter’s 1976 presidential campaign, is also part of the park. As the oldest building in Plains, the depot now houses a self-guided museum where visitors can learn about Carter’s life and work.

One of the park’s most popular trails is the Jimmy Carter Childhood Farm Trail, a 0.5-mile loop that’s generally considered easy. The path winds around the restored farm, passing animals and historical markers along the way.

Find Unique Gifts and Antiques Along Main Street

Main Street in Plains is full of charming boutiques and is a highlight of any trip. You can shop, stay overnight, or do both at the Plains Historic Inn and Antique Mall, which offers everything from dishware and soaps to home decor and gifts. As you meander down the street, you’ll discover other local businesses selling seasonal items, handmade goods, and unique accessories to add to your collection.

Take a Short Drive to See the Wonders of Providence Canyon

Another must-see destination is about a 45-minute drive from Plains: Providence Canyon State Park. This 2,706-acre park features a stunning canyon formed by erosion from poor 19th-century farming practices. Often called Georgia’s “Little Grand Canyon,” the canyon’s vibrant pink, orange, and red hues make it a breathtaking sight. Visitors can enjoy picnic shelters, campsites, a playground, and a museum. The park is so beautiful, you could easily spend a few hours taking in the dramatic landscapes—and I wouldn’t blame you.

Grab a Delicious Bite at the Buffalo Cafe

Of course, after a day of sightseeing, you’ll work up an appetite. You’ll want to stop by the Buffalo Cafe at the Old Bank, a beloved American comfort food restaurant on Main Street. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner in a casual, welcoming space. Their sandwiches, burgers, soups, and salads are a delicious way to end a day of shopping and activities in Plains.
