There Is A Unique Man-Made Wonder Hiding In This Small Town In Georgia

We talk a lot about natural wonders in Georgia, and, of course, there are plenty of those (and they're more than worth a visit!), but we have our fair share of man-made wonders, too. There's something fascinating about a covered bridge that stirs up a sense of nostalgia and a yearning for days of yore. At one time, we had more than 250 covered bridges in Georgia, but you'll find just a small handful today. The longest of them all is the Red Oak Creek Covered Bridge in Woodbury, GA. Woodbury is a tiny city with a population of under 1,000 people. It's in Middle Georgia and it's a wonderful place for a quick day trip. Check it out:

Oddly enough, Woodbury is actually internationally-known. It's a setting in the hit comic book and television series The Walking Dead.

Sadly, the real Woodbury doesn't get its Hollywood moment, as the TV show was filmed in Senoia, Georgia, about 25 miles away.

You will find a few noteworthy things in the Woodbury though. Most notable is the Red Oak Creek Covered Bridge.

This magnificent Town lattice truss was built around 1840 and spans 412 feet over the Red Oak Creek.

Visit Fitzgerald Fruit Farms when the crops are in season and you'll get to experience a u-pick patch. The farm store here stocks fruit butters, dressings, sauces, and more, and concerts and other fun events are regularly on the schedule.

When you need a bite to eat, you won't want to miss Smitty's Cafe.

In a small town, there aren't a lot of places to choose from, but even if there were, it's likely that Smitty's would still be popular. This place serves up good old country cooking and the catfish is divine.

Woodbury is a small town, and you won't find many places to stay there, but it's just a few minutes away from Warm Springs, where you'll find tons of history and a great hotel in the Mountain Top Inn and Resort.
