This Charming Canal Town In Georgia Is Like Something From A Dream

When we think of canal towns, our minds may automatically go toward someplace like Venice in Italy or Amsterdam in the Netherlands. But little did we know, Georgia has it's very own canal town—a place where the industrial side of life flourished and commerce was in peak position. This historic town can attribute much of it’s growth to the construction of this canal, and visitors can still enjoy the waterway to this day.

Augusta, Georgia is a canal town that is filled with charm and character.

While most people wouldn’t normally equate Augusta with being a canal town, a little bit of history might change that perception.

In 1845 when the Augusta Canal was built, it helped to provide water to the city, as well as power to factories and transportation of goods.

The canal essentially rescued the city from a business depression and ended up fueling the economy and helping each of the businesses in the area grow.

The Augusta Canal even became a huge component of the Civil War, providing war-related industries with energy and power throughout the mid 1800s.

The city of Augusta is already situation at the head of the Savannah River, which only makes its location even better for commerce.

As the canal was built over time, businesses began popping up along the water’s edge—factories, shops, a gristmill, and more.

Today, a canal-park idea was enacted creating a recreational area for all to enjoy.

Many Augusta residents choose to make the canal their home, situating themselves right alongside the water for a more dreamy atmosphere.

Yet, some can appreciate from afar, and still understand the importance this canal holds in shaping this entire area of Georgia.
