Between St. Augustine and Daytona Beach Is an Underrated State Park
Whether you're strolling the rocky beach or admiring the formal gardens, you'll quickly become enchanted by this picture-perfect road trip stop.
Florida’s Northeastern coast is brimming with travelers making their way to St. Augustine, Daytona Beach, or perhaps both high-energy destinations. And most drive right by one of the most underrated places in Florida: Washington Oaks Gardens State Park. If you’re someone who loves beaches but isn’t interested in crowds, this is the perfect road trip stop.
Where to Find This Hidden Gem in Florida

Washington Oaks Gardens State Park is 35 miles north of Daytona Beach and 20 miles south of St. Augustine, making it easy to reach from northern Florida. It’s located in the lovely Palm Coast, right along the scenic A1A coastal highway. It's one of the best things to do between St. Augustine and Daytona Beach because it gives you an authentic view of the coast beyond the typical tourist sites.
What Makes This Stop so Special

There are many reasons why a trip to Washington Oaks Gardens State Park is worthwhile, but perhaps the most compelling reason is the unique, almost unexpected combination of formal gardens and rocky beach. Unlike most of Florida’s beaches, which offer smooth sandy shorelines, this Atlantic Beach has ancient coquina rock formations. This environment is perfect for beachcombing, exploring tidal pools, and admiring the undeveloped oceanfront.
After you’ve gotten your fill of saltwater, venture to the formal gardens, just across the main road. Feast your eyes on colorful azaleas, birds of paradise, camellias, and other native and non-native species. Travelers agree that the rose garden is especially memorable, so be sure to have your camera ready!
What to Do When You Visit

One of the best things to do at Washington Oaks Gardens State Park is to simply stroll along the rocky shoreline. Also, if you can, try to plan your beach time around low tide, when more of the shoreline is exposed, and you can really see the tide pools, shells, and dramatic rocks. The park offers a handful of short trails that are ideal for walking or biking, whichever you prefer. There are also opportunities for picnicking and fishing right from the beach or the seawall along the Matanzas River.
Walking the gardens after spending time on the beach is another must. After all that sun, you'll appreciate the garden's shade and slowed-down pace. Take time to notice informational signs around the park that share more about the unique flora and fauna, plus a bit more context about the land's history and the indigenous tribes who lived here. If, like me, you're fascinated by old trees, be sure to find the 300-year-old oak in the very center of the gardens!
So, if you happen to be making the drive from St. Augustine to Daytona Beach, you'll find Washington Oaks Gardens State Park to be the perfect road trip stop. In fact, it warrants a visit in its own right! For more information and tips on visiting the park, be sure to check out the official Florida State Parks website.
