But what many people might not realize is that Oviedo is also home to one of the most mysterious folklore Florida has told. Have you ever heard the story about the Oviedo Lights in Florida?
The small city of Oviedo, (O-vee-dough) Florida is often touted for being one of the coolest places to see some historic houses and buildings.
But there’s also another side of Oviedo, that perhaps many haven’t heard for themselves. As far as folklore goes, the Oviedo Lights rank pretty high in terms of strange and mysterious phenomena.
As the tale goes, when crossing the bridge over the Econlockhatchee River just outside of Oviedo, people often see a weird, greenish glowing set of lights.
These lights are seen rising out of the surrounding swamp and murky waters in the river.
Before you chalk this up to simply fireflies or a trick of the eye, it’s been reported that these lights have been seen for over fifty years, and are known to chase cars!
People also have dismissed these weird lights as just being swamp gas, until they saw for themselves the lights following cars.
A few things people have noted over the years regarding the Oviedo Lights - they appear only as one light at times, but sometimes five at the same time!
Also, they are only seen at night and remain an attraction to anyone courageous enough to venture out at night with a flashlight to find them.
