This Little-Known Waterfront Town Is One of the Most Charming in Connecticut
Head to Branford to discover a little-known waterfront town in Connecticut with some of the state's most unique features and accommodations.
The Connecticut Coast is one of my favorite regions in New England, especially when summer comes around, as it's usually less crowded than my native Jersey Shore but not any less charming. From the bustling city of New Haven to the cultural center of New London and the quirky atmosphere of Old Saybrook, every town has something to offer. Still, there's one little-known waterfront town in Connecticut that I think deserves more attention, and that's Branford. Located just to the east of New Haven, this town of around 28,000 is part of the big city's greater metro area, but it feels a world apart. Branford features one of the most beautiful waterfronts in the Nutmeg State, as well as some of its most unique lodgings and a downtown full of memorable history and charming shops. Even during the busiest times of the summer, it rarely gets the crowds of some of Connecticut's most famous beach towns, so this is the perfect opportunity to discover its charms for yourself.
Why This Little-Known Waterfront Town in Connecticut Is So Charming

Branford might be right next door to New Haven, but it's so much more laid-back. The main street has a historic vibe to it and is full of unique shopping and dining. The town is home to a surprising number of wineries and breweries, making it a great spot for a grown-up night out. However, the best things to see and do in Branford tend to concentrate around the coast.
What To See and Do in Branford

Being a waterfront town, it's no surprise that Branford's beaches and marinas are hopping when the weather gets warm. The town weaves around Stony Creek, so there is plenty of coastline, and the area is popular for fishing and boating. Additionally, the coast is a great spot for vacation rentals with ocean bayside views right outside your window.

There's one signature spot in Branford that's famous around the northeast, and that's the Thimble Islands. This quaint archipelago is a unique feature of Connecticut, and each of the small islands has been built up with homes and vacation rentals. A visit to one of these islands by ferry is a memorable outing, and you can even stay the night.
Best Time to Visit Branford

Branford is gorgeous through the year, and summer is a very active time here, but we especially recommend a visit in the fall, when the trails and ponds around the area are covered in some of the most underrated fall foliage in the region. The Washburn Preserve is a lesser-known hiking spot in the area that offers some especially gorgeous leaf-peeping.
This little-known waterfront town in Connecticut is always welcoming, but the busy season is about to start soon—and there's plenty of room for you to discover its beauty for yourself. Tell a beach-loving friend about this article and pay it a visit this summer! You can see more information about the town and its tourism opportunities on the Branford website.
