Escape to These Charming Mountain Towns in Colorado Before Fall Ends
Colorado is full of charming mountain towns, and fall is a spectacular time of year to visit them.
Colorado has many charming mountain towns, and people come from all over the state, the nation, and the world to visit them in all four seasons. While summer and winter are Colorado's most popular tourism seasons, all parts of the state can become quite busy and crowded during those popular times of year. Fall is a vastly underrated time of year to visit Colorado's mountain towns, but many who are in the know feel that this is the best time to experience the beauty of the Rockies. Fewer people tour the area during the autumn season, and the foliage, views, and temperatures are spectacular.
You'll love visiting Colorado mountain towns in the autumn months, and you're sure to have an incredible adventure that you'll never forget. You can't go wrong no matter where you go during this time of the year, but four towns that we recommend for leaf peeping and relaxation are Steamboat Springs, Vail, Breckenridge, and Estes Park. Read on to learn more about all of them—and for things to see and do in each one during the fall.
1. Steamboat Springs

Steamboat Springs is the largest city in northwestern Colorado, but it's still quite small and quaint—its year-round population is approximately 13,000. People love Steamboat Springs for skiing in the winter, but it has so much more to offer as well. The town itself is full of shops, bars, restaurants, and historic buildings, and Strawberry Park Hot Springs is, in my opinion, one of the very best hot springs experiences in the whole state.
You'll love spending your mornings at the hot springs, your afternoons exploring the nearby mountain trails, and your evenings dining and wandering the city's main streets. Steamboat Springs is about 3.5 hours from Denver, and it's a great place for a quick and quiet getaway.
2. Vail

Vail is one of the more unique Colorado mountain towns that you'll find in the Rockies. Unlike most Colorado mountain towns, it is not very old. It's home to Vail Ski Resort, the largest ski resort in the state, and the town that surrounds it was not incorporated until 1966, four years after the ski resort opened. Since then, Vail has grown by leaps and bounds. Today, it's full of incredible, unique, and well-rated restaurants, high-end shops, and so much more. The city hosts a variety of popular festivals and events all year as well.
Many people choose to visit Vail over other mountain towns because it's so accessible. It's immediately off I-70, and it's only a little over two hours from Denver. If you're looking for a place where you can find resort accommodations, plenty of things to do, and memorable dining experiences, you'll love it. Be sure to make time to check out the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens while you're in town, and take a walk or bike ride along the path that follows Gore Creek, too. This area is especially lovely during the fall season.
3. Breckenridge

Breckenridge is one of my favorite mountain towns. It offers so many things to see and do at all times of the year. It's a wonderful combination of old and new buildings and businesses, and it's equally great for couples, individuals, families, and groups of friends for a fun fall adventure.
Fall foliage surrounds Breckenridge on all sides, and it will take your breath away—it's one of the most beautiful places in Colorado to be in autumn. It's located in a valley between gigantic mountains on both sides, and those mountains are covered with aspens. Most aspens turn yellow in the fall, but you can also find shades of orange and red mixed in as well.
Perhaps the best place in Breckenridge to fully immerse yourself in foliage and fall beauty is Boreas Pass. A drive along this route will bring you as high as 11,493 feet before bringing you back down into the town of Como. From there, you can circle back to Breckenridge to make a loop. This is one of the best mountain pass drives in the state, and I try to do it myself at least a few times a year. The road is dirt for much of the way, but it's easy to navigate in a regular passenger car. Don't miss it.
4. Estes Park

Estes Park is known as a gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park. Summer is the busiest season in this mountain town, but once fall begins, the crowds begin to dissipate and decline rapidly, making Estes Park a perfect fall destination.
Although the famed, high-elevation Trail Ridge Road—which passes through the park at mind-boggling elevations—closes in early fall due to snow, there's still a lot of Rocky Mountain National Park available from the town. The scenic Bear Lake Road Corridor, for example, is full of wildlife, trees, and memorable day hikes.
Once you're done exploring the park, Estes Park is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy dinner and drinks with friends. In the evening, you can stroll around this small town and enjoy its overall vibe.
You'll love visiting all four of these charming Colorado mountain towns this fall. Plan to check out one each weekend if you can! There's nothing like spending time in the Rocky Mountains, and there's no better time than in the fall.
