The Walkable Colorado Town That’s Known for Its Rich History
Leadville, Colorado is charming, welcoming, historical, and easy to get around. If you're looking for a walkable Colorado town, this is it!
There are many lovely small towns in Colorado, but none are quite as interesting, welcoming, and inviting as Leadville. This town is full of history, shops, restaurants, bars, and friendly folks, and you'll love relaxing and exploring at just about 10,200 feet. The best thing about Leadville is that it's small enough to be entirely walkable, so once you park the car upon arrival, it's unlikely that you'll need it again until you depart. Leadville is a wonderful place to visit for a day, weekend, or even an entire week. You'll love everything about this town.
Leadville is one of my very favorite towns in the state of Colorado. It has a little bit of everything, but it's still small enough that it's not overwhelming in any way. In fact, it's the opposite of overwhelming — not underwhelming (not at all!), but rather cozy, comfortable, and relaxing. It was one of the first mountain towns I visited in the state, way back in 2000, and I enjoy returning there whenever I can.
This is small-town America at its best. Leadville is easy to get around, and you can easily walk from place to place. The sidewalks are well-maintained where they exist, and there are no worries about being hurt by a fast-moving car when walking or biking on the residential streets where no sidewalks exist. Furthermore, Leadville is quite small — its population is just over 2,500 residents — which means you can walk from anywhere in Leadville to anywhere else in Leadville in 10 minutes or less.
One of the things that draws visitors to Leadville is its interesting history. Like other small towns in the Colorado Rockies, Leadville was first a mining town. When silver was discovered in the area, Leadville grew and grew. At one point in the 1880s, the town was the official home of over 20,000 people. At that time, it is believed to have had more than 120 saloons, plus dozens of stores, restaurants, outfitters, hotels, and more. Famous people came from all over the world to visit Leadville and to try to get rich. Some succeeded, but many failed. Still, Leadville was, for a time, one of the richest cities in the world.
Soon, however, the boom ended, and the population quickly declined. By 1900, the population had dropped to 12,000. By 1930, it had only 4,000 residents, and it hovered at that or a bit below that ever since.
The small size of Leadville is what makes it so homey and welcoming today. Despite its small size, though, there are still plenty of things to do during a visit. The National Mining Hall of Fame is an interesting museum that tells visitors about Colorado mining history and mining in general. Many people enjoy rides on the Leadville Railroad or tours of the Matchless Mine site. The area is surrounded by breathtaking hiking trails, and I always enjoy camping at nearby Turquoise Lake.
There are also quite a few very well-rated restaurants in Leadville, so it's a great place to get a bite to eat, too. High Mountain Pies makes great pizza, and spots like The Leadville Grill and Cantina, and the historic Legendary Silver Dollar Saloon are wonderful places to sit back and have a few drinks. Mineral 1886 serves a fantastic breakfast, and Quincy's Steak & Spirits is an excellent choice for a great dinner.
You'll love exploring this small Colorado mountain town on foot at any time of the year. Annual events are happening here almost every weekend. Some of the most popular include races like the Leadville Trail 100 Mile Bike Race in mid-August, the Leadville Turquoise Lake 20k in May, Trick or Treat on Main Street in October, and Leadville Boom Days in early August, to name a few.
There are also plenty of great places to stay in Leadville if you choose to stay overnight. The Historic Delaware Hotel was built in 1886 and is still serving guests today. The Timberline offers a variety of rooms from regular hotel rooms to large suites, and the Inn the Clouds Hostel and Inn provides affordable accommodations for budget travelers.
If you haven't visited Leadville before, then the time has come. Plan a visit to this great little town soon, and you're sure to fall in love with it right away. Leadville is special, and it embodies the spirit of Colorado mountain towns in every way.
