The Epic Rest Stop Near Denver That’s Actually Worth Pulling Over For
Buffalo Herd Overlook near Denver offers scenic views, wildlife sightings, and amenities for road trippers.
When you're on a road trip, the sign for a rest stop can be a welcome sight. You'll usually find clean bathrooms and sometimes a picnic table or two to enjoy a quick snack. There's one rest stop near Denver that's much more. Take a look!
You'll find the Buffalo Herd Overlook off I-79 at exit 254 in Golden.
This stretch of the highway is particularly scenic. The rest area offers restrooms, trashcans and even free overnight RV parking.
The view here is spectacular.
Sometimes you can see the bison right from the road. If not, explore the trails at Genesee park.
The bison were brought here in 1914. A few came from the Denver Zoo, and a few more came from Yellowstone National Park.
What began as a conservation effort turned into a thriving herd of a few dozen.
Sometimes the animals get right next to the fence, allowing you to get a very close view.
Enjoy watching the bison, but remember that these huge beasts are wild. Don't tease them or attempt to navigate the fence.
Because the bison roam through Genesee Park, you may find them in different spots throughout the day. It's worth searching them out!
