The Little Town In Northern California That Might Just Be The Most Unique Town In The World
Murphys is not only a unique gold country town, it's an amazing place to bring the whole family for a visit. Whether you are into wine tasting, historic buildings, small town charm, or even some Mark Twain history, Murphys and the surrounding area does not disappoint.
One of the oldest continually operating hotels in the state, the Murphy's Hotel has hosted the likes of Ulysses S. Grant and Mark Twain.
It was built in 1856 by two entrepreneurs, James L. Sperry and John Perry.
Today, the main street of Murphys is walkable and quaint. There are fun shops to explore and delicious restaurants to try.
You'll be charmed by the historical architecture.
There are a ton of interesting things to explore nearby, like the Mercer Caverns.
There been many celebrities throughout the years who have called Murphys home and you can see the master list by visiting the Famous Residents Wall. It's located in an alleyway just off main street.
One of the quirkiest things that make this place truly great is that it is located in Calaveras County, which was made famous by Mark Twain's story, "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County."
People and frogs still compete in this lively contest, located just outside of town at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds.
It gets very competitive. You'll be astounded by how far some of these frogs jump. Rosie the Ribeter, an American Bullfrog, jumped 21 feet in 1986.
Overall, Murphys and the surrounding area is an incredible place to visit or make a home.
Murphys started out as a tiny mining camp during the Gold Rush, but it has evolved into a truly amazing community. Share your favorite things about this quirky town and the surrounding areas with us on Facebook.
