The Scenic Road Trip That Leads to 5 of Northern California’s Most Charming Small Towns

Take in the views from the mountains to the coast as you visit and explore five delightful towns in Northern California.

Northern California always makes me think of wine country, the dramatic coastline, and some of the most delightful towns. The next time you are itching to get out on the open road and explore some lovely spots along the way, grab your keys and set off on this picturesque trip that leads through rolling hills, picturesque vineyards, sprawling ranches, tall forests, and the rugged and beautiful coast — and to five incredibly charming small towns in Northern California.

There is a lot packed into this 150-mile trip. With just over 3.5 hours of driving time, you'll have plenty of time to get out and explore each destination and even make a few unplanned stops (which the scenery just might demand). I recommend spreading it out over a weekend — at the very least — so I have included a couple of lovely options to stay the night somewhere in the middle. 1. Sonoma

The first time I visited the town of Sonoma, I fell in love. It is the most picture-perfect town with a downtown plaza surrounded by historic buildings, shops, wineries, and restaurants. The plaza square itself is a park with playgrounds, a duck pond, a rose garden, and an amphitheater. It is also home to many local events throughout the year.

Sonoma is classic California wine country and a true foodie destination. If you love wine tasting, stop at WALT Wines or Hawkes Wine in the plaza, or take a short drive to the beautiful Gundlach Bundschu Winery for wine tasting and a wine cave walking tour.

2. Calistoga

Our next destination is another wine country favorite of mine, Calistoga. The town is home to the spectacular Castillo di Amorosa winery, an authentic 14th-century castle set on a gorgeous vineyard. You can tour the castle, taste the amazing wines (my favorites are the La Fantasia, IL BRIGANTE, and Il Passito), and purchase your favorites as they are not sold elsewhere. Keep in mind that you will need a reservation to enter the property.

Calistoga is also home to one of only three "Old Faithful" geysers, mineral hot springs, and mud baths (which also happen to be great options for spending the night), and its quaint tree-lined downtown area is full of local boutiques, bistros, and wine-tasting rooms. I recommend having lunch at the Calistoga Inn Restaurant & Brewery where you can dine al fresco along the Napa River surrounded by lush greenery.

3. Healdsburg

Not far from Calistoga, sitting along the Russian River, is the town of Healdsburg. The town is centered around a charming 19th-century plaza and is known for its incredible food and wine scene and its scenic vistas. Wineries like Jordan Vineyard & Winery offer walking tours that include wine tasting, food pairings, and stunning views.

Two of Sonoma County's Michelin-star restaurants are here in Healdsburg, including the unique and charming Barndiva, with its lush garden terrace, twinkling lights, and farm-to-table fare. For art lovers, there are more than two dozen galleries located within walking distance of downtown. And, of course, there is plenty of shopping to be done. For a peaceful night's sleep before heading up the coast, consider a stay at The River Belle Inn.

4. Mendocino

A beautiful drive through vineyards, ranches, and forests will bring you to the edge of the coast and up to the wonderful little town of Mendocino. Nestled right along the bluffs over the blue Pacific, this quaint town will win your heart and offer you far more than a half-day's worth of things to do. You can explore beautiful state parks, pristine beaches, ancient redwood groves, cliffside trails, and lush botanical gardens.

The town itself is reminiscent of a New England Village with its adorable cottages, historic Victorian houses, and picket fences. Wander the walkable town to browse the quaint shops for books, hand-made goods, Parisian trinkets, jewelry, and more. Then, head to Café Beaujolais for fresh seafood, locally foraged mushrooms, wood-fired pizzas, and a lovely wine selection.

5. Fort Bragg

Just a few minutes north, you'll find the tiny town of Fort Bragg, known especially for its magnificent coastal vistas. Explore the trails, rock formations, coves, and tide pools at Noyo Headlands Park. Visit the famous Glass Beach and take in the views on a walk across the historic Pudding Creek Trestle bridge. There are a surprising number of great restaurants in town to choose from when you work up an appetite. Stop at Headlands Coffeehouse for a caffeine fix, dine at The Wharf for fresh seafood and harbor views, or head to The Pub at North Coast Brewing Company for barrel-aged brews and pub classics. And be sure to head back to the cliffs for an unforgettable California sunset.
