When you feel like exploring someplace new, one of Northern California's small towns is always a great place to start. Our region of the Golden State is full of fantastic little communities, but there's one that especially caught the attention of Smithsonian Magazine. Nevada City was named one of the country's best small towns to visit and we most definitely agree! Full of history and charm, this humble town should be on your to-see list.
Earlier this summer, Smithsonian Magazine released a list of "The 15 Best Small Towns To Visit in 2021" and we saw one of our very own featured: Nevada City!
With a population of just over 3,000, Nevada City is as charming as can be. Known for its abundance of Victorian-era structures and rich Gold Rush history, this small town boasts plenty to do and see around its tight-knit community.
You'll feel as if you've fallen into a Hallmark movie from the moment you arrive on Nevada City's main street. That's not too far off, actually! The town was notably the star of a Hallmark Channel Christmas Movie called The Christmas Card, which we've written about previously.
Nevada City's abundance of century-old buildings is another thing that sets this town apart. Among them is the National Exchange Hotel, which is one of the oldest continuously operating hotels west of the Rockies. And yes, it's allegedly haunted.
History isn't the only thing to love about this small town. It's also a fantastic base camp for your next adventure. The Deer Creek Tribute Trail is an idyllic hiking trail that will lead you through the woods, alongside a creek, and over a stunning suspension bridge.
And don't worry, there are plenty of places to stay in Nevada City that aren't haunted. Bed and breakfasts are abundant in this delightful town in addition to hotels, campgrounds, and more.
A trip to this historic town should definitely be in your future! Whether you're looking for history, nature, or just a good time in a friendly community, Nevada City checks all the boxes.
