The Northern California Mountain Town That Feels Like a Slice of Switzerland in the U.S.
No passport is needed to visit this town nestled in the mountains, surrounded by lakes, and home to Swiss-style chalets, resorts, and rentals.
Switzerland is one destination that you’ll find at the top of my bucket list. This incredible country is known for many things, from chocolate and cheese to gorgeous landscapes (the Swiss Alps!) and unique architecture. For many of us, however, a trip to Switzerland isn’t in the budget, or we just don’t have the time to travel such a far distance. Fortunately, that’s not a problem because Mammoth Lakes, California, feels like a slice of Switzerland here in the U.S.

Mammoth Lakes is the type of place where you’ll fall in love with the area and community as soon as you arrive. This town is tucked away in the Sierra Nevada mountains and is an outdoor lover's paradise, no matter the season. This mountain town is approximately 40 miles from Yosemite National Park and 130 miles from Death Valley National Park.
Although, just a word of warning: When you visit Mammoth Lakes, you will not want to leave. Just like the scenery you’ll come across in Switzerland, everywhere you turn you’ll be greeted with jaw-dropping views in this California town. The Sierra Nevada mountains provide the perfect backdrop for most outdoor activities, with small, picturesque lakes dotting the landscape.

Throughout the year, countless outdoor activities allow you to easily surround yourself with these views. Summer is quite popular in Mammoth Lakes as you’ll have dozens of hiking, backpacking, and mountain biking trails to conquer. In fact, Mammoth Lakes is surrounded by the Inyo National Forest, which is 2 million acres of land and home to dozens of hiking trails, including several that take you to stunning, remote lakes. Some of the most popular lake hikes in the area include the Crystal Lake Trail, McLeod Lake Trail, and the Lakes Basin Path, which is a paved trail that takes you to multiple bodies of water, including Horseshoe Lake, Lake Mamie, and others.

Winter is just as majestic. June Mountain and Mammoth Mountain Ski Area both provide incredible skiing and snowboarding experiences, and you can’t forget about the cross-country skiing, tubing, sledding, ice skating, and snowshoeing opportunities in the area as well.

Of course, fall and spring are picture-perfect times to visit. During the fall months, Mammoth Lakes and the surrounding area transform with vibrant fall foliage. In the spring, wildflowers dot the landscape, fishing is excellent, and there are many annual events to keep your calendar full.
Yes, Mammoth Lakes is paradise for nature enthusiasts, but you can’t overlook the town itself. As you walk around and visit the locally owned businesses, shops, and restaurants, notice the variety of goods available to purchase and the unique architecture on many buildings. The Swiss style of many of these structures is just one more reason you’ll feel like you’ve marked Switzerland off your bucket list—and no passport was even required.

And speaking of chalets and cabins, there is a wide variety of places to stay in Mammoth Lakes, from hotels and resorts to bed and breakfasts and cozy vacation rentals. You’ll find ski-in/ski-out condos and spots like the Tamarack Lodge, which is remote, private, and home to a bucket-list-worthy restaurant. For a true Swiss vibe in Mammoth Lakes, book a stay at the Edelweiss Lodge, a 1950s knotty-pine lodge that will genuinely make you feel like you’ve traveled overseas.
The list of things you’ll love in Mammoth Lakes, California, is long—very long. This mountain town is a little slice of Switzerland in the U.S., and we can't wait for you to visit.
