This Little-Known Waterfront Town Is One of the Most Charming in Northern California
This Northern California gem offers stunning waterfront views, unique streets, and a relaxing escape near San Francisco.
There is a little-known waterfront town in Northern California that has captured my attention. Actually, it is capturing the attention of individuals around the U.S. Located on the Tiburon Peninsula in the Bay Area, and offering some of the most incredible views of the San Francisco skyline and the Golden Gate Bridge, the town of Tiburon is becoming a destination worthy of every bucket list. It’s beautiful, upscale, and offers plenty to see and do—it’s a NorCal town you’ll quickly love.
Why This Little-Known Waterfront Town in Northern California Is So Charming

Tiburon, California, is making a name for itself with all that it has to offer. This town of approximately 9,000 residents is small compared to its many neighboring cities and has a charming, yet upscale vibe throughout it. Since its early days, this area has been a place of excitement and intrigue. In 1775, Lt. Juan Manuel de Ayala named the peninsula “Punta del Tiburon” due to the high number of sharks in the nearby waters. In the 1800s, the area was part of a land grant used for cattle ranches and dairy farms. Then, in the late 1880s, a railroad terminal and ferry connection were established, and it became an industrial hub. Today, you can still see evidence of the town’s industrial history, but it is also a prime destination to explore, shop, dine, and simply get away.
Strolling Along Tiburon’s Main Street
Throughout the years, downtown Tiburon has been renovated and revitalized. Now, it is a place with beautiful parks, upscale shops, bucket-list-worthy restaurants, and plenty of history. Located on Tiburon’s charming Main Street, you’ll find historic Ark Row, where many high-end boutique shops and restaurants are located in houseboats or "arks" from the late 1800s. Along Ark Row, not only can you enjoy the unique architecture, but you can also enjoy gorgeous views of the bay as well.
On select nights in the summer, community members and visitors flock to Tiburon’s Main Street for the town's Friday Night on Main event. During these highly anticipated evenings, Main Street is closed to vehicles as locals and visitors can walk the street, enjoy the views, and experience live music, games, face painting, outdoor dining, shopping, and so much more.
What To See and Do in Tiburon

While the streets of Tiburon are worth exploring, the views from this waterfront town near San Francisco are unforgettable. Tiburon's location on the peninsula provides panoramic views of the San Francisco skyline, the Golden Gate Bridge, and nearby Angel Island. While there are several spots around town where you can enjoy this scenery, Shoreline Park and the Shoreline Boardwalk, located at the ferry landing, are some of our favorites.
Hippie Tree is another gem with breathtaking scenery of the surrounding cities and landmarks. Found just off Gilmartin Drive, Hippie Tree features a darling swing hung on a giant Eucalyptus tree. While swinging, you'll enjoy city, bay, and sky views surrounding you. This area is particularly gorgeous at sunset.

Of course, for even more time outdoors, you can visit places like Paradise Beach State Park or Angel Island State Park. If you are up for a bit of a hike and some incredible scenery, head to Ring Mountain, a gorgeous ridge on the Tiburon Peninsula. The Old Rail Trail is another place perfect for some time exploring, where you’ll enjoy incredible Bay views. Plus, this trail will lead you from downtown Tiburon to Blackie’s Pasture, a field loved by locals for its former resident, a horse named Blackie.
What to Know Before You Go

Due to its location on the peninsula, you have a few options to reach the town of Tiburon. If traveling by car, you will cross the Golden Gate Bridge and follow Highway 101. Tiburon is approximately 20 miles from downtown San Francisco. Another popular option is to arrive by ferry. Two ferries take travelers to Tiburon: the Golden Gate Ferry and the Angel Island Tiburon Ferry. Of course, if you want a little more adventure, also consider riding your bicycle to Tiburon over the Golden Gate Bridge and following the Tiburon Peninsula Path.
Spring and fall are the best seasons to visit Tiburon. These times of the year are beautiful, with spring wildflowers surrounding the area. In the fall, you'll have minimal fog to hinder your view, unlike the summer, which is known as "June Gloom" due to its excessive coastal fog. Additionally, ferries are less busy during spring and autumn, allowing you to have an easier time reserving a ride and enjoying a much quieter experience.

Tiburon is becoming more well-known, but compared to places like San Francisco and Oakland, it’s truly a gem. With history, bucket-list-worthy shops and restaurants, and Bay Area views that will make your jaw drop, you’ll never want to leave. No wonder this is one of our favorite small towns in Northern California to visit. It’s truly charming in every single way.
