The Beautiful Southern California Town That’s Surrounded By Water On All Sides

Coronado, California, is a charming island community known for its historic Hotel Del Coronado and beautiful beaches.

Southern California is home to countless incredibly charming and beautiful towns, each of which features its own unique and spectacular beauty. You’ll discover breathtaking beaches and majestic mountains sure to make you fall in love with Southern California, but there is one little community that we simply can’t get enough of. Surrounded by water on all sides, Coronado, California is an absolute dream, and we can’t wait to show you around.

Nestled off the coast of San Diego, Coronado was founded in the 1880s and is an absolute must-visit. Though Coronado is often thought of as a resort city, more than 24,000 residents call this charming town home.

Connected to the mainland by a tombolo — the place from which an island is attached to the mainland by a narrow piece of land — called the Silver Strand, Coronado is easily accessible via a drive across the Coronado Bridge...

...or a ride on the passenger ferry that delivers tourists and locals alike to Coronado across the San Diego Bay.

If you’re looking for an island getaway that will make you feel as though you’ve traveled a million miles away but is still close to home, Coronado is an absolute dream. Whether you visit for a day or an entire weekend, we think everyone should experience this Southern California gem at least once in their lifetime.

There’s no doubt that the most iconic spot in this coastal community is the Hotel Del Coronado. When it opened in 1888, this hotel was the single largest resort hotel in the world, and today, it is the second largest wooden structure in the United States, and a National Historic Landmark. Its beauty is profound, and a trip to Coronado isn’t complete without a visit here — even if all you do is snap a few photos.

Coronado is not only home to one of the most iconic hotels in the country but one of the best beaches as well. In 2012, Coronado Beach was named the best in the United States by Dr. Beach, also known as Dr. Stephen Leatherman, the Director of the Laboratory for Coastal Research.

With views of the vast Pacific Ocean as well as San Diego, there's truly no better place to be than this terrific town surrounded by water.

Spend your time soaking up the sun and splashing in the Pacific at Coronado Beach, get some exercise with a leisurely bike ride or stroll along the promenade, or even enjoy a picnic at the park. You can also check out any of the remarkable restaurants — along with their picturesque patios — as well as some stellar shopping.

There is no shortage of things to do and see in Coronado, and you’ll feel as if you’re on a tropical vacation, even if you were only able to get away for a few hours, so what are you waiting for?
