Carpinteria is proof that there is a calmer side to Southern California. The coastal city lies just 12 miles southeast of Santa Barbara. It is home to the world’s safest beach, gourmet cafés, antique stores, and pedestrian-friendly streets. If you are up to it, we challenge you to head to Carp, as the locals call it, for a day trip full of sightseeing, shopping, delicious meals, and relaxation.
Start your day by grabbing a bite at Padaro Beach Grill. The oceanside eatery serves great food and spectacular views in a family-friendly atmosphere. Try the Padaro Burger; the melted cheddar and Chipotle mayo combo is fantastic!
Visit Carpinteria State Beach. It is a beautiful mile-long beach for swimming, tidepool exploring, surf fishing, scuba diving, and camping. Although your canine friend is not allowed on the beach, there is a picnic area where they can enjoy the outdoors, too.
Your next stop is the Carpinteria Harbor Seal Preserve and Rookery. The sanctuary is home to about 100 adult seals who give birth on the Carpinteria shoreline. To quietly watch the seals in their habitat, stand on the bluffs above the preserve with binoculars.
Next, it's time to play with the cutest, silliest animals! Head to Canzelle Alpacas, a farm nestled in the foothills of the city. Join the tour to meet a herd of over 50 llamas, sheep, alpacas, horses, pigs, chickens, dogs, horses, and Archie the Water Buffalo.
For a little mid-day relaxation, head over to Island Brewing Company. The microbrewery has served beer enthusiasts and food and beverage outlets since 2001. Enjoy seasonal releases, barrel-aged, fresh, and flavorful offerings in the tasting room.
Your day trip will be incomplete without visiting the Carpinteria Valley Historical Society. The museum provides a fascinating glimpse into the oceanside city’s past through exhibitions, galleries, and monthly Museum Marketplace flea markets.
You can learn more about this must-visit coastal town on its official website. If there is one thing to take away from this article, it's that a day trip to Carpinteria will be one for the books. But do not make memories alone! We are pretty sure your human or canine friend wouldn't mind tagging along.
