This Sleepy Northern Californian Town Is the Perfect Dupe for the Irish Countryside
A visit to this small town might just scratch your itch for the rolling green hills of the Irish countryside.
Did you know that there are places that look like Ireland in California? Vacaville, a city in Northern California tucked between the bustling Bay Area and sun-kissed Sacramento, is truly the perfect Irish countryside dupe. This town is a pastoral escape right in our own backyard. If you've been yearning for Ireland's rural beauty but aren't quite ready to part with the green in your wallet, Vacaville offers a charming alternative.
Why Vacaville Feels Like the Irish Countryside
What is it about the Irish countryside that so effortlessly captures the imagination? When I first visited Ireland for my sister-in-law's wedding, I was left utterly enchanted. It's a land where rolling pastures spill into cerulean coastlines and where echoes of the past—whether in stories or ancient castle ruins—await discovery around every bend in the road.

If I asked which of these images was the Irish countryside and which was the landscape near Vacaville, could you tell? Of course, there are elements of an Irish vacation that an in-state getaway can't replicate: the thrill of exploring a new culture, towns steeped in centuries of history, and, perhaps most memorably, one's transformative first sip of fresh Guinness.

But judged on aesthetics alone, it's hard to find a fault in Vacaville's emerald-hued scenery. In fact, Vacaville's pastoral charm may even outshine Ireland's—at least when it comes to weather. While Vacaville owes its vibrant greens in part to higher-than-average rainfall (by California standards), its 64.5 days of drizzle are child's play compared to Ireland's 225. Even in the height of summer, you're likely to receive a proper "Irish welcome" in the form of a gentle drizzle. A visit to Vacaville is more likely to deliver on the sun-soaked adventure you'd imagined—no umbrella required.
Explore Nearby Wine Country and Northern California Landscapes
If a vacation in rural Ireland is about happening upon the next cozy local pub, then a getaway to Vacaville is all about immersing yourself in Northern California's nearby wine country. Rise early for a scenic drive through the area's rolling greenery, and in just 45 minutes, you'll find yourself in the heart of Napa Valley—home to world-renowned vineyards, delicious eateries, and imminently shoppable boutiques.

Toast the sunset with a glass of award-winning wine, or meander back to your home-away-from-home, sparing enough time to uncover your own hidden gems along the way. Prefer hiking boots to steering wheels? There's plenty to take your breath away in Vacaville proper. Chase the breeze on the lush hills of Peña Adobe Regional Park. This 8-acre park in Vacaville features more than 40 miles of trails and a visitor center. It is located within Lagoon Valley Park, a 306-acre park that is home to a historic adobe home, a 100-acre lake, and trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. You can also head north to trace the tranquil shoreline of Lake Berryessa along the Smittle Creek Loop for an easy and scenic adventure.
Best Time to Visit Vacaville for Lush Green Hills
While there is no bad time to visit Vacaville, if you want to experience the lush, green Northern California rolling hills, spring is when you’ll want to plan your visit. From February to April, following the winter rains, the hills become vibrant and beautiful. Of course, if you time your visit just right, these lush green hills will also feature vibrant wildflower blooms, adding even more color to this Northern California region. Keep in mind that when summer’s heat makes its arrival, the countryside begins to turn brown. The rolling hills are still mesmerizing, but they just lack the greenery that makes it feel like an Irish countryside dupe in California.

For those seeking the charm of Ireland's pastoral scenery without breaking the bank or breaking out the umbrella, book a weekend escape to Vacaville, California. Be among the first to fall in love—locals already have. Between their warm welcome and the green, rolling hills, you're guaranteed to experience the magic of an Irish holiday—no passport necessary.
