When you don’t have a lot of time in your schedule, day trips are the best way to escape. Luckily, in Arkansas, we have lots of places where we can spend some time enjoying outdoor recreation that include fishing, hiking, swimming, and more. And many of these destinations are tucked inside our small towns. That’s especially true for Shoal Bay, a pretty little creek in New Blaine, Arkansas. So, if you’re searching for a great hidden gem for your next family-friendly adventure, we recommend this small town getaway. There’s no doubt that a Summer day at this scenic creek in Arkansas will be a blast for your entire family.
With just over 150 residents in New Blaine, chances are, you've never heard of the tiny town. Tucked inside the Arkansas River Valley, it's a quaint little community just 15 miles west of Dardanelle.
But don't let the size fool you. This sleepy little town is a true hidden gem and a great destination for a Summer day trip.
That's because it's home to Shoal Bay Park, a little-known recreation area tucked on the banks of the stunning Shoal Creek.
The scenic creek is surrounded by breathtaking mountain views. And it's also connected to Lake Dardanelle, offering its own recreational opportunities.
Though small, the park boasts 62 campsites with water as well as electricity, 2 boat ramps, a picnic area, a playground, and more. So, it's great for an overnight stay.
But for our purpose, we are only here to enjoy all the park has to offer for a day. Bring the kayak and enjoy a peaceful float along the creek, while admiring the scenic vistas.
The little ones will love the swim beach, they could spend hours playing in the water or on the banks of the lake.
You'll be happy to know that your furry friends are allowed, but do keep them on the leash, especially while exploring the hiking trails.
And speaking of hiking trails, there is another hidden gem at this park. Bridge Rock Trail is a 1-mile rugged trail that's considered easy to moderate.
You must climb some steps along the journey, but the reward is worth the trek. There's a unique rock formation that is a sight to behold, and you'll want to explore it from various vantage points.
After all that adventure, you must have worked up an appetite, right? So, head to town and grab a bite to eat at Dinner Bucket.
Don't worry, it's only a 5-minute drive from the recreation area.
This local gem is known for its down home breakfast plates, but the lunch platters are equally delicious.
Just about a mile from Dinner Bucket, there is also a grocery store, where you can pick up snacks, beer, and more.
After you've fueled up, head back to Shoal Bay, where you can enjoy the rest of the afternoon catching bass, bream, as well as catfish.
Or sit back on the banks of the creek and bask in the gorgeous setting sun. Best of all, after a fun-filled Summer day at this scenic creek in Arkansas, you'll be home in time for bed.
