Kick off the gorgeous fall season in Winslow, Arkansas. This mountain town is a photographer’s dream and a must-visit this year.
It’s that time of year, folks, can you feel autumn in the air? Well, you should! The colorful season is coming our way, and I couldn’t be more excited. As the weather continues to get cooler and we close out the end of summer, chances are, you're thinking about the best destinations in Arkansas to witness breathtaking fall foliage. Of course, we have lots of options, from our scenic byways to our state parks, and I can’t forget to mention our charming small towns. These dreamy destinations come alive and burst with vibrant colors during the fall season. And that's especially true for Winslow, Arkansas, a picturesque hideaway in the Ozarks. This mountain town in Arkansas is a photographer's dream come true and one of the best places to kick off the gorgeous season.
Just 50 miles south of Bentonville, you'll find the tiny town of Winslow, Arkansas. Although it has fewer than 500 residents, this sleepy little town is a magical destination for lovers of the fall season. The town comes alive in the autumn, bursting with yellows, oranges, and fiery red hues. And its location in the Ozarks makes it an ideal place to witness the best of the season.
Day trippers will find plenty of fall activities here. Whether they enjoy scenic train rides, seasonal festivals, or simply spending time soaking up the colorful countryside, you'll find that and more. Since autumn is the time to embrace a slower pace, this town invites both visitors and locals to march to its peaceful beats.
During the fall months, expect seasonal events including arts and crafts shows, workshops, and musical celebrations. I admire that this close-knit community gathers regularly to keep the heart and soul of Arkansas alive through folk music. Stop by the Ozark Folkways, a local gallery dedicated to preserving the culture. Throughout the year, the organization hosts music events, workshops, art shows, and so much more. Plan your trip around the first week in October, and you'll be in town for the yearly Fiber Fest, an event dedicated to arts-related activities featuring exhibits, vendors, demos, a silent auction, and contests. It's a wonderful way to get to know the locals and learn a skill handed down by our ancestors in the area.
For the ultimate autumn adventure, hop on board the Arkansas-Missouri Railroad for its fall excursion. The 3-hour trip from Van Buren to Winslow features the most spectacular views of the Ozarks. As you wander through the Boston Mountains, you'll be mesmerized by the vibrant countryside. But the train ride isn't the only way to marvel at the autumn beauty. The picturesque town has lots of gorgeous spots that are bursting with stunning hues, too.
If you want to stretch your legs and see the vibrant landscapes, pack your hiking boots and spend some time in nature. Take a hike through nearby Devil's Den State Park or rent a cabin in the woods and fully immerse yourself in all the surrounding beauty. True outdoor enthusiasts will want to hike to the top of White Rock Mountain. There's no better place to marvel at the season than from 2,260 feet above sea level. Of course, you'll run into some hidden gems as you explore this pretty town. Photographers will want to make the best of these beautiful spots.
And if chasing waterfalls is your thing, then you'll be delighted to know that there are endless cascades that are flowing during the cozy season. Between the picturesque excursions as well as the breathtaking Ozark vistas, I recommend that you add Winslow to your list of towns to explore this fall season.
