I’ve Been Gatekeeping 5 Little-Known State Parks in Arkansas
The secret is out! Discover these local gems in Arkansas that we have been gatekeeping (a few might even surprise you!)
When we live in an era where information is literally at our fingertips, it’s hard to gatekeep anything. As soon as an influencer (or famous person) discovers a hidden gem and shares it on social media, more than likely, it will go viral. Before you know it, folks are flocking to this destination to experience it for themselves. And while we encourage everyone to explore these places, sometimes, we like keeping a few of them our little secrets.
And that’s no different for Arkansas, as there are some little-known state parks that we have been gatekeeping. These local gems in Arkansas all have something unique to offer, but have managed to remain under the radar. Check out my list of these low-key destinations that out-of-towners don’t know about.
1. Mississippi River State Park, Marianna

Not only is this underrated state park along one of the most iconic rivers in the country, but it’s part of a national forest with access to two national scenic byways. Plus, there are several waterways for boating, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, and more. With two recreational areas, folks can camp, swim, hike, bike, and do everything in between. The visitor center boasts interpretive exhibits that are great for the kiddos and a gift shop to buy fun stuff to take home. Located in the Delta, the Mississippi River State Park is often overlooked for more popular destinations in the Ozarks. Sure, there aren’t towering waterfalls or mountain peaks here, but its charm lies in its unique terrain that defines eastern Arkansas.
2. Delta Heritage Trail State Park, West Helena
Just a few miles from Mississippi River State Park is another hidden destination that tourists miss. Delta Heritage Trail State Park is Arkansas’s only rail-to-trail state park and is still in its development phase. So, this one-of-a-kind park is not even on the radar of many locals. When completed, the park will cover 85 miles of trails winding through over 10 towns in eastern Arkansas. I love that you can create your own adventure along the miles of trails. You can bike, hike, and view wildlife, not to mention the multiple access points for boating, fishing, and kayaking. This low-key state park in Arkansas is great for folks seeking a weekend-long adventure. And since most visitors (and some locals) skip this destination, you’ll find peace and quiet here.
3. Logoly State Park, Magnolia
If you’re like me and enjoy getting away from the crowds, Logoly State Park might just be your best option. Located about 130 miles from Little Rock in southwest Arkansas, this park is so hidden that you might have it to yourself. As an educational and environmental park, expect a “living laboratory” of natural resources and a unique ecosystem. Sure, the park is great for educational purposes, but it’s also a haven for outdoor fun. Enjoy catch and release fishing, hike along flowing streams through peaceful woodlands, or spend the day picnicking with your family. This remote park in Arkansas is the kind of destination where locals come to take things slow and relax.
4. Cossatot River State Park, Wickes
Unless you’re an avid kayaker or white-water rafter, you might not consider Cossatot River State Park. Designated as a National Wild and Scenic River, it’s one of the most rugged waterways in the central US. The unique river with its Class III, IV, and V rapids is the main reason for visiting, but surprisingly, this river wilderness area has more to offer than that. When water levels are low, the rocky riverbed is a great place to sit and soak up the scenery, and the miles of hiking trails wind through lush forests and canyons with rewarding views. Most visitors will skip the Cossatot River to explore the more popular Buffalo National River. So, needless to say, this natural wonder tucked inside the Ouachitas is a well-kept local secret.
5. Lake Catherine State Park, Hot Springs
Since it’s located near Hot Springs National Park, Lake Catherine is often overlooked by tourists. But what they don’t know is that this state park has one of the prettiest waterfalls in Arkansas: Falls Creek Falls. Locals love this beautiful waterfall with its turquoise blue pool, and it’s a popular swimming spot in the warmer months. You can set up a hammock and spend hours admiring the pretty cascade or hike to see the other wonders in the park. It’s easy to see why we would want to keep this park a secret from the droves of tourists that visit Hot Springs every year.
