This Hidden Park in Arkansas Is a True Local Secret

Locals can't get enough of this peaceful park near Little Rock, Arkansas, featuring the most breathtaking views of the River Valley.

Living in Arkansas means having the enchanting Ozarks as a playground in your backyard. Of course, this means folks have easy access to expansive forests, mountains, lakes, and some of the best waterfalls in the south. Petit Jean is one of my favorite state parks in Arkansas, attracting almost a million visitors each year. Obviously, it’s a popular destination for tourists and locals alike, seeking a unique experience in the Natural State.

Unfortunately, we can’t keep this outdoor playground hidden - even if we wanted to! The good news is that there are lesser-known parks in Arkansas that have remained true local secrets. One such destination is Emerald Park in North Little Rock. This undiscovered, hidden park in Arkansas features a 200-foot bluff, breathtaking views of the Arkansas River, and the city skyline. In a bustling city like North Little Rock, this urban haven is a true hidden gem that feels like it’s miles away.

Discover Emerald Park

Over a century before Arkansas became a state, the French explored the area around the Arkansas River. Explorer Jean-Baptiste Bénard de La Harpe met with Native Americans in the region who told him about a large green rock along the river. Assuming they would encounter a massive green gemstone (to their disappointment), instead, the explorers discovered the enormous bluff rising above the river, covered with lush green trees. I can only assume that this “lost-in-translation” moment was so impactful that the park eventually adopted the name: Emerald Park.

After settling the land, it was used for a quarry, vineyards, and a summer resort before the government built Fort Roots in 1897. Today, Emerald Park is a 135-acre oasis sitting on top of a towering bluff above Big Rock Quarry Park. The urban playground features hiking trails and scenic overlooks with awe-inspiring views of the River Valley. Although there are no precious emeralds here, this gorgeous park is the crown jewel of North Little Rock, Arkansas.

Why Visit Emerald Park?

Views, views, and more views! Emerald Park is arguably the most picturesque destination in Central Arkansas. Since the park is perched on top of a massive bluff, folks can enjoy unobstructed views of the Arkansas River Valley. On a clear day, expect to see the quarry and river below, the entire city of Little Rock, and the Pinnacle and Ouachita Mountains in the distance. Sure, the views are nothing compared to those from the bluffs at the Buffalo National River, but this city park offers a peaceful place where nature lovers can escape from the hum of everyday life.

With miles of hiking trails as well as spur trails, you could easily spend hours exploring the area and soaking up the stunning views. The best way to explore the park is to hike the six-mile Emerald Park Trail. The trek meanders through dense forest and along the bluff line. You’ll find locals lingering at the overlooks along the trail or soaking up the views from the edge of the towering cliffs. If you’re there during sunset, do yourself a favor and find a quiet spot to sit and bask in all the beauty.

Since portions of the trail are paved, you’ll see wheelchair users and moms with strollers here. It’s also a popular spot for local bike enthusiasts who love to explore the more rugged side trails along the way. Be sure to bring the dogs and kids along for this outdoor urban adventure. There will be lots for them to see and do as you trek. Wildlife is plentiful here, so the little ones will enjoy seeing the armadillos, deer, possums, turtles, and various species of migratory birds, too.

As an amateur photographer, I would recommend Emerald Park as an ideal spot to snap pics for your collection. The views alone will inspire your nature-loving soul. The area is especially dreamy after sunset with the glowing lights from the skyline of Little Rock. Even though you’re within minutes of the city, this urban escape invites you to breathe and remember why Arkansas earned its name as the Natural State. It’s easy to see why locals like to keep this undiscovered, hidden park in Arkansas to themselves.
