The Ultimate Weekend Itinerary If You Love Spending Time Outdoors In Arkansas
Explore the hidden gems of Northwest Arkansas through a weekend of outdoor adventures and urban exploration.
There’s no doubt that the Natural State is the best place for outdoor adventures. From scenic hiking trails to breathtaking waterfalls to mountains, rivers, lakes, and more, there is no end to the treasures that lie within. And oftentimes we tend to venture into the more secluded regions of the state while avoiding the populated towns. I believe these urban areas are also brimming with natural wonders ready to be discovered. So, let’s spend 2 days on this ultimate weekend adventure exploring the hidden gems of Northwest Arkansas. It’s not only one of my favorite places in the state, but it’s the perfect mix of natural areas as well as trendy urban spaces. Are you ready to explore these outdoor adventures and activities in Arkansas? LET’S GO!!!
From national parks and campgrounds to waterfalls, canyons, and more, there is so much to love about America’s natural splendor — and June, designated as Great Outdoors Month, is the perfect time to get outside.
With approximately 2 hours of drive time, you’ll have lots of time to explore the natural wonders of Northwest Arkansas. From Eureka Springs to Rogers to Fayetteville, you’ll love all the incredible gems along the way.
Float to Hogscald Hollow
There are tons of outdoor adventures and activities in Arkansas. And the best way to kick off the Great Outdoor month is with a floating adventure at a picturesque natural wonder - Hogscald Hollow near Eureka Springs.
Once used by Native Americans as a healing spring, Hogscald Hollow is now a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. And it’s easy to see why, as this natural wonder is simply breathtaking. There is a cove as well as a waterfall for you to marvel at. The waterfall is called Lovers Leap and rightfully so, as this spot is secluded and romantic. Located on the eastern side of Beaver Lake, the area is accessible by hike, boat, or kayak, and this hidden gem is worth the adventure. Aside from floating, take some time to enjoy the swim hole, you'll be glad you did. In my humble opinion, this is the best hidden gem in NWA.
Explore War Eagle Cavern
Let’s continue this adventure with another natural wonder on Beaver Lake. After all, the lake is brimming with hidden treasures waiting to be explored.
And War Eagle Cavern near Rogers Arkansas is one of them. This lakeside cave in Arkansas is the only one of its kind and it’s also the largest cave opening in the state. There are two ways to experience this underground adventure: 1) the easy breezy 1-hour cavern tour on paved surfaces and 2) spelunking through the crevices on the Wild Cave Tour. On the 1-hour guided adventure you’ll meander through the crevices of the cave, spotting flowing streams, interesting rock formations and you’ll also hear tales of moonshiners, squatters, outlaws and more, as you trek. After the cave tour, enjoy more outdoor fun including gemstone panning, exploring the hiking trails, or finding your way through a maze. You can easily spend an entire day on this unique cave excursion.
Stroll the Stunning Botanical Garden of the Ozarks
After your underground cave tour, the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks will add vibrant colors and welcoming scenes into your itinerary.
Tucked on the east side of Lake Fayetteville, this 44-acre oasis features 12 themed gardens, a butterfly house, water and art installations, and more. Lush, well-manicured lawns offer great opportunities for an afternoon picnic. Moreover, the gorgeous garden is a gathering place where locals and visitors alike enjoy yearly festivals, free concerts, as well as other fun, family-friendly events. The kids will have a blast at the enchanting Firefly Fling Festival, while the adults will love the Chef in the Garden foodie event. Between the lovely blooms, festivals, and serene gardens, the botanical garden is the perfect venue for outdoor fun in Arkansas.
Dine at Feed and Folly
By now, you must’ve developed an appetite after a day of outdoor adventures. Let’s head into the heart of Fayetteville and spend a relaxing evening on the rooftop patio of Feed and Folly.
This trendy restaurant combines stunning views, delicious food, as well as warm southern vibes. In my opinion, that is the perfect recipe for the best eateries in Arkansas. The patio features views of the city as well as the rolling hills that surround Fayetteville. It’s a welcoming scene coupled with a fun and friendly atmosphere, and chances are, this gastropub will be your new favorite rooftop spot in NWA. Aside from the patio, you’ll love the food. Inspired by English cuisine, the menu items include smoked meats, classic fish n' chips, poutine, and more. Sit back on the patio enjoy a cold beer or one of the signature cocktails.
Stay at a Secluded Riverfront Escape
To conclude our weekend adventure in NWA, I found this incredible secluded VRBO in Huntsville Arkansas - the Kings River Marshall Ford home.
Nestled at the top of a towering bluff on the Kings River, this incredible 5-bedroom rental is perfect for more weekend adventures. Featuring picturesque views of the rolling hills of the Ozarks, an outdoor fire pit, a large spacious yard, and more, you’ll find plenty to do at this rental. The river is an oasis to enjoy swimming, fishing, kayaking, and floating. This VRBO is the perfect accommodation to wrap up your ultimate weekend adventure in Arkansas.
