What if I told you that you can experience Europe without a passport, crossing the pond, or leaving the state? Would you be interested? If so, then let’s head to Fort Smith for a European-inspired day trip in Arkansas. We’ll indulge in authentic European cuisine, marvel at gorgeous Victorian-style architecture, perhaps ride a tram, and indulge in a velvety foamed latte in a quaint café. If you’re sold on my idea, then come with me on this incredible day trip, you won’t soon forget.
As the third largest city in Arkansas, Fort Smith has a lot to offer. There is incredible art, dining, shopping, as well as lots of historical sites, making it a great place for a day trip. But what you may not know is that you can totally enjoy a European-inspired adventure inside the city.
Yep folks, you can ride a tram, indulge in a warm latte, visit a monastery, savor authentic cuisines, as well as marvel at stunning architecture. To start this trip, let's head to the Artistic Bean, a local café that could arguably be plucked from the streets of Italy.
Here you can enjoy a freshly baked, buttery croissant or delectable pastry paired with a velvety foamed latte. The smell of freshly brewed coffee as well as the warm atmosphere will be a welcoming way to kick off this European-style adventure.
After you've indulged in your morning coffee, I suggest strolling over to the Belle Grove Historic District. Featuring 22 blocks of homes with European-style architecture, you'll want to take your time admiring them all.
Surely, you must stop by the Clayton House for a tour. Built in 1852, this lavish Queen Anne-style mansion is the representation of true luxury and sophistication. Once inside, you'll believe you've left Arkansas and transported to a posh European town.
But wait, there is more! No European-style day trip is complete without visiting a place of worship. After all, Europe has many of these sacred spaces that are visited by millions every year. And yes, I know Arkansas doesn't compare, but there's a monastery that definitely belongs on this trip.
Housed inside a 5-story Gothic/Tudor Revival-style building is the St. Scholastica Monastery and it's home to the Benedictine Sisters. The stunning architecture as well as the serene grounds, sprinkled with statues and replicas of religious symbols is something that you must witness for yourself. Private tours are available, but you can walk the grounds on your own, while admiring all the beauty of this sacred space.
Of course, by now, you've developed an appetite, so let's continue our day trip quest by savoring a meal at an authentic Italian restaurant. Situated inside a gorgeously restored 1887 medieval European-style mansion is the beloved family-owned eatery Taliano’s Italian Restaurant.
Here you can feast on authentic Italian cuisine that could easily rival a meal from a grandma living in the countryside of Italy. The recipes have been passed down through generations, so you know you're getting the best and freshest ingredients. Be sure to pair your meal with a glass or 2 of wine, and finish with a smooth and decadent dessert.
I have no doubt that after this trip, you'll want to visit Fort Smith again and again. Moreover, there are many other ways to experience the town including riding a tram or a trolley to marvel at all that it has to offer.
