But I'm happy to share that there are several lesser-known canyons in Arizona that look just like the Grand Canyon... minus the crowds. One is the Salt River Canyon, between Globe and Roosevelt Lake.

Where to Find This Unique Spot in Arizona

If you love the Grand Canyon but aren't a fan of the crowds, the Salt River Canyon Scenic Drive offers strikingly similar views with a small fraction of the tourism. The road along one of the most impressive scenic byways in Arizona is about a 30-mile stretch of U.S. 60. It's one of those Arizona day trip ideas that starts off as a casual plan and becomes the highlight of the trip.

The route runs alongside the Salt River between Globe and Roosevelt Lake. Only around 15 miles long (compared to the Grand Canyon's 277 miles), the Salt River Canyon may not seem like an attraction worth visiting, but you can hardly tell the difference from above. The Salt River Canyon happens to be a great dupe for the Grand Canyon!

Both canyons feature towering rock walls that rise on either side of a swiftly flowing river. If you roll down your windows, you can hear the powerful roar of the water below as you explore one of the best drives in Arizona.

What It Looks Like in Person (And Why It’s So Surprising)

You will encounter several sharp curves and hairpin turns; however, they are doable as long as you go the speed limit. An added bonus of driving slowly is taking time to soak up the scenery on Salt River Canyon Drive. This is a scenic drive where you roll down the windows and turn up the tunes. Throw on your favorite playlist and soak in those dreamy windshield views.

There are several pullouts along this scenic byway in Arizona, so you can stop and take pictures or simply enjoy the beautiful nature with your own two eyes. Even better, a rest stop at the bottom of the canyon boasts picnic tables just steps away from the river. Follow a path down to the waterfront for a better view of the impressive scenery.

Topping off the experience is the old Salt River Canyon Bridge, which is open to pedestrian traffic only. Built in the 1930s for cars to cross the river, a newer, wider bridge was built next to it in 1996 as a replacement, and the original bridge was closed to vehicles. Looking down to see the water rush through the canyon is truly incredible! Hence, another reminder of why this is one of the best scenic drives in Arizona.
