The Walkable Arizona Town That’s Known for Its Cool Retro Vibes

Want to get your kicks on Route 66? Stop by the town of Kingman, Arizona. With its nostalgic charm and retro vibe, it's one of our favorite walkable towns in Arizona.

Destinations like Arizona are a roadtripper's dream come true. Not only is the state blessed with jaw-dropping landmarks, but the Main Street of America, aka Route 66, runs right through it, too. And you already know that the iconic highway is filled with quirky towns known for retro vibes. One of our favorites is Kingman, Arizona, and it’s a must-visit when you’re in the area. I promise you that a day trip to this walkable town in Arizona will leave you with some lasting memories. Make sure you have your camera ready—trust me, you’ll need it!

My favorite thing about Kingman is that you don’t need a car to explore its historic downtown district. Walking through the area, you’ll run into a treasure trove of neon signs, classic cars, retro diners, museums, and historic landmarks.

Known as the “Heart of Route 66,” this town is literally stuck in time and has preserved its history with vintage relics. If you ask me, that’s part of its nostalgic charm, and you’ll for sure get your kicks here.

Founded in the 1880s as a railroad and mining town, Kingman was a major hub for shipping and moving supplies through Arizona. Back then, the town was a stopping point for miners and railroad workers traveling through the West. Though it has become a tourist hotspot, historical landmarks preserve its railroad origins.

History buffs will enjoy the museums and the many buildings on the National Historic Register. Most of them are within walking distance in the pedestrian-friendly town. Don’t skip over the Kingman Railroad Museum, located right in downtown's heart.

I recommend stopping by the Kingman Visitor Center, which houses the Arizona Route 66 Museum, to learn about the town and chat with the friendly locals who take pride in their slice of heaven. Be prepared to hear tales about famous celebrities with ties to Kingman, including Andy Devine.

One of the most iconic spots to visit is Mr. D’z Route 66 Diner. This 50’s 's-themed diner is a popular stop for visitors who love snapping pics of the vintage eatery. The food is good, too, so grab a burger and root beer while you’re here.

In addition to historical sites and landmarks, the town has coffee shops, boutiques, antique stores, and vintage motels, all located on Andy Devine Avenue (Route 66), within minutes of each other. Plus, there is always an event or festival happening here that brings the community together.

And if you love murals and neon signs, you’re in for a real treat. Scattered throughout the town, there are murals and iconic signs at every turn. They’re great backdrops for the pictures you’ll be snapping while you're here. To see them all, take the Self-Guided Historic Downtown Walking Tour or the Kingman Main Street Walkabout narrated tour. Two of the most iconic spots for pics are the Drive-Thru Shield and the Historic Water Tanks.

The town is surrounded by natural beauty outside the historic downtown district. Check out the unique hiking trails featuring a mixture of mountainous and desert landscapes. You’ll need to strap up your hiking boots and hop in your car to get to the natural terrain, but the rewards will be worth the effort.

Kingman, Arizona truly has a unique character and electrifying personality. Not only is the town brimming with nostalgic charm, but its natural beauty and retro vibe are infectious. You’ll find plenty to do and see in this walkable town in Arizona. It’s great for a day trip or a weekend getaway. So, the next time you find yourself cruising down the iconic Route 66, don’t hesitate to stop in at Kingman. I guarantee you’ll get some kicks here. And if you're looking for other things to do or eat in the area, check out our itinerary planner for recommendations!
