All Aboard The Train That Takes You To Go Hiking In The Alaskan Wilderness

If you're looking for an incredible adventure, take a train to hike out to Laughton Glacier! This awesome train starts in Skagway and brings you up into the mountains to a breathtaking hike on one fabulous glacier. It's a perfect day trip for anyone in or near Skagway (well, or those who are willing to travel a bit) who enjoys getting up close and personal with the breathtaking wilderness! When it comes to train rides in Alaska, this one is as good as it gets.

The Yukon Pass and the Yukon Route Railway were established in 1899 and have been carrying passengers up the mountains and through the passes into Canada ever since. There are now fabulous different excursions offered to anyone who wants to experience the area further.

The Skagway to Laughton Round Trip Excursion is the perfect day hike for the adventurous family.

The train will take you up a narrow gauge railway for 14 miles. You will then stop and and detrain before beginning your 5-8 mile self-guided hike out to the glacier!

The hike is considered moderately difficult and ends at the stunning Laughton Glacier.

You'll wander through old growth forest, across a beautiful river, and up a glacial moraine. This hike is uneven and is set in the wilderness of Alaska, so some experience is recommended.

You'll love every bit of the trail and there is even a U.S. Forest Service Cabin only 1.5 miles out.

You do have to make reservations for the cabin ahead of time, should you wish to utilize it. Reservations can be made via the U.S. Forest Service. You'll have to book that separately from the train tickets - and well in advance. This little place is a popular spot despite the challenge of getting there.

The trip runs about three and a half hours total, but it could run longer if you're like us and keep getting distracted by the beauty of the area.

This trip does require a passport, as you'll be passing into Canada. It's an incredible trek for those in fairly good physical condition.

Prices are really affordable, costing $99.00 per adult and only $49.50 per child.

Make sure to book on their website, as those are the best prices available. Don't be fooled by third-party sales! Book at least 24 hours in advance of your trip, and you ought to be golden.

This train runs all summer season, from April 29th through October 3rd.

Make sure to make reservations way in advance, as Tuesday and Wednesday spaces are extremely limited.
