The Sitka Summer Music Festival in Alaska is a month-long event featuring world-class classical music performances and community engagement.

Alaska has many different facets. Seen mostly as a place of adventure, many don't realize that we have so many aspects to Alaskan culture. The Sitka Summer Music Festival is a highly anticipated annual event that showcases some of the best classical music in Alaska.

The Sitka Summer Music Festival is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1972.

Its mission has been to bring world-class chamber musicians to Alaska. It is a full month during the summer of fantastic classical music!

During those four weeks over 24 performances are held in places all over town.

Over 100 volunteers help out during the festival. Also 25 local businesses offer their help and resources to the festival!

In July of 2014, an International Cello Seminar was created.

This is a 20 day seminar that includes many resources for the cellists that attend. You can expect private lessons, master classes, career workshops, and more.

You have to apply to be accepted into the International Cello Seminar.

The cellists apply from all over the world for this intensive study. The participants engage with the Sitka community, including free performances all over the town.

The music festival performers also put on shows in Anchorage twice a year, offering around 9 times.

These usually happen in September and February. They also offer performances at the Anchorage Museum, and visit both school orchestras and the Hiland Women's Prison Orchestra.

They also perform all across the state about three times a year.

Even communities in the far reaches of Alaska enjoy classical performances. The Sitka Summer Music Festival have performed in over 42 different communities in Alaska over the years.
