Although Alaska is (hands down) the most beautiful place in the world, we do have our fair share of places in the state that have been touched by pure evil. Let's take this case, for example; A man that was a part of functioning society - contributing to the community and running a successful and beloved business, had us all fooled. He was a menace to society and someone that led a truly sinister double life. He used Merrill Field Airport in Anchorage as his gateway to a sick path of human-hunting and the many areas that he later turned into grave sites are spread all throughout South Central Alaska. This airport and these places in Anchorage, Seward and the Mat-Su Valley now have a dark and evil history that will never be forgotten.
If you live in Alaska, changes are that you've heard of a serial killer by the name of Robert Hansen. He is often times refereed to in the media as the "Butcher Baker" because he owned a small bakery in downtown Anchorage. The business was thriving and abundantly popular, until he was arrested and charged with things like assault, kidnapping, weapons offenses, theft and insurance fraud.
As the story goes, he used to pick up "call girls" that were working at nearby downtown strip clubs (or were walking the streets). He would say that he was going to pay them to preform sexual acts, but he had a much more sinister plan in store.
He would hold them at gun point, handcuff them and hold them against their will in his car.
Here is where the story gets even more twisted and disturbing. It is said that Hansen would then drug the women and drive them to nearby Merrill Field where he owned a Piper Super Cub.
He would load the women up in his small float plane and take them out to remote areas in Alaska. He would tell the girls that he was going to take them out to his special "cabin in the woods."
Which was later said to be just a meat shack on the Knik River area of the Matanuska Valley.
As a man that was once a well respected friend and neighbor, Hansen was known for being an excellent hunter and outdoors-man.
Which was all great until he decided to abduct women and take them out to remote areas in Alaska to drop them off and then (literally) hunt them in the remote wilderness. It is said that he would leave these women to try and fend for themselves after he had first tortured them both mentally and physically. So they would run and run until he would kill them and leave them to rot.
When Hansen was finally arrested, he led authorities to grave sites all over Southcentral Alaska including Anchorage, Seward and the MatSu Valley. It was reported that there were over 30 victims, 17 of which were confirmed murders of women ages 17-41.
These disturbing events left a dark stain on Alaska's history. So much so that in 2011 Hollywood came to the last frontier to film the movie Frozen Ground (with John Cusack, Nicolas Cage and Vanessa Hudgens) that was based on real life events.
