Enjoy Alabama’s Greatest Waterfalls and Wildlife on This Perfect Day Trip
Let’s kick off this adventure at DeSoto Falls, one of the most iconic waterfalls in Alabama. Located in DeSoto State Park, this gargantuan cascade clocks in at over 100 feet, making it a real wonder to see up close. The trek to the waterfall is easily accessible, so no strenuous hiking is necessary. However, if you did want to meander around the falls to soak in the natural beauty, feel free!
Just a short drive from DeSoto Falls is another natural wonder: Little River Canyon National Preserve. Created in 1992 by an Act of Congress, this preserve encompasses 15,288 acres of land, including what some have said to be the longest mountaintop river in the country! This stop perfectly encompasses what this day trip is all about: waterfalls, sandstone cliffs, canyon rims, forested uplands, and all-encompassing wilderness.
After taking in the canyon views, head to Martha's Falls, also known as Little Falls, for a scenic picnic. During warmer months, this spot doubles as a beloved swimming area where you can cool off in the refreshing waters.
Pack a picnic with locally sourced treats and enjoy lunch with a waterfall soundtrack. If you need some lunch recommendations as you drive to the falls, Kelly’s Kitchen and Katy’s Katfish are beloved Rainsville staples!
We have another great waterfall on our adventure itinerary, this one coming in at 90 feet and plunging into a giant gorge. Noccalul Falls Park encompasses 500 acres of land at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The centerpiece of the park is Noccalula Falls, which is naturally fed by rainfall from Black Creek. Make sure to visit after a heavy rainfall so you can see the cascade in its glory.
Pro tip: One of the most special attractions here is that you can walk behind the waterfall! By accessing the Gorge Trail, you can pass directly under the Falls. Also, make sure to check out the bridge that leads over Black Creek to enjoy a 360-degree view of the waterfall.
What could be better than ending the day with a meal on the water? Jake’s On The Lake is an open-air, family-friendly seasonal restaurant where locals gather to chow down and mingle. Picture a beach bar atmosphere with live music and great views. Open Memorial Day through Labor Day, relax on the patio with a frozen cocktail, and order up some mahi-mahi tacos. Sounds like a great way to end the trip.
