The Can’t-Miss Alabama Hike for Every Nature Lover’s Bucket List

Desoto Falls Bottom and Ice Box Cave Trail packs many beautiful views into a short amount of time.

An Alabama bucket list hike for nature lovers, the Desoto Falls Bottom and Ice Cave Trail near Mentone, Alabama, packs many beautiful scenes into a short distance and amount of time. It only takes half an hour or less to hike this 1.1-mile out-and-back trail, which has a manageable elevation gain of 196 feet. Considered moderate in difficulty, it is perfect for hikers of almost every age and skill level.

Finding the trailhead is a breeze once you know where to look. On County Road 613, keep an eye out for a parking area on the right. While it’s not prominently marked, you’ll know it when you spot it, and parking is free. Thankfully, the trail itself gets great reviews for how well it’s marked to guide your way.

From this trailhead, the path descends gently toward the West Fork Little River, eventually meandering alongside the calming waters. While the path direction is clear, continually watch your steps, as the path can be rocky and rooty in several sections. Meanwhile, the interesting rock formations along the way add interest to the scene.

The trail takes on different personalities throughout the year, treating visitors with its ever-changing scenery. During the spring months, vibrant mountain wildflowers adorn the landscape, while autumn paints the trail with fall foliage, making September through October a particularly picturesque time to visit.

The first big feature of this trail (and part of its name) is Ice Box Cave about .2 miles in, which is a large rock overhang you can explore. It's a cool spot to retreat on a hot day and even better if you happen to get caught in heavy rain.

The undeniable highlight of this trail is the beautiful Desoto Falls. Seeing its cascading waters tumble 104 feet down the rocks is the reward here, and it's a most impressive sight after rainfall. On hot summer days, wear a swimsuit and take a dip in the swimming hole below the falls.

If you like to hike with your pup, dogs are allowed on the Desoto Falls Bottom and Ice Cave Trail. As always, bring bags to clean up and make sure to be considerate of other hikers on the trail.
