Filled with scenic streets, historic spots, and charming shops and restaurants, Jefferson is a delightfully charming small town in Texas that’s a great destination for a weekend getaway. It does, however, come with a fairly haunted history, and many think that this tiny town of fewer than 2,000 is a paranormal hotspot. Located in the heart of downtown Jefferson, the Excelsior House Hotel is the oldest continuously operated hotel in Texas. This historic haunt has been around since 1858, so it should come as no surprise that there are a few ghost stories swirling around these walls. The hotel’s 15 guest rooms have hosted several iconic guests, including Oscar Wilde, Lady Bird Johnson, and even Steven Spielberg. Supposedly, Spielberg had such a strong paranormal encounter here, that couldn’t make it through the night. The silver lining is that it did inspire the famous director to film the hit flick Poltergeist.
Originally built as a cotton warehouse in the 1850s, the Jefferson Hotel might just be one of the most well-known haunted hotels in Texas. Guests have had so many unexplained occurrences here, that the hotel has its very own "book of the dead," a ghostly guestbook where guests can write down their paranormal encounters.
This historic haunt was built in 1865 and has been both a saloon and a brothel before becoming a hotel in 2016. This hotel has a rather violent history, with several stories of gun violence, shootings, and robberies. Many believe that those that met their maker under such violent circumstances are doomed to wander these halls for eternity, which may be why so many supernatural events have happened here. In one instance, a woman and her 7-year-old son were murdered when a robbery went south, and it’s widely believed that these are just two of the spirits here. Andrew, the young boy, is known to play tricks on guests, while his mother, Jessica, has been seen at the top of the staircase wearing a white dress.
