What if there were a single hiking trail that had it all? With fascinating history, beautiful nature, and a distance of less than 1.5 miles, the Cave, Tower, and Wash Pond Trails Loop at Mother Neff State Park in Texas is one such adventure. This short-and-sweet, leisurely stroll takes you to a hidden cave where early humans once lived, plus a turquoise pond that’s almost too beautiful to be real.
Texas' very first state park, Mother Neff has an incredibly rich and fascinating history.
Humans have lived in the area for nearly 10,000 years, attracted by the Leon River and the fertile landscape surrounding it. In the mid-1800s, Noah and Isabel Neff purchased 900 acres of land along the river, six of which Isabella would entrust to the State of Texas in her will. Given the nickname "Mother Neff," Isabella was a beloved member of the community, inviting friends and neighbors to picnic, swim, and fish on the waterfront she called home.
Upon Isabella's death in 1921, her son, Pat, developed Neff Memorial Park.
He donated the park, which totaled 250 acres by that time, to the state in 1934, and his neighbor, Frank Smith, gave an additional 3.5 acres. Mother Neff State Park officially opened in 1937, thanks in part to the hard work of the Civilian Conservation Corps, who helped construct park roads, walking trails, picnic areas, and campgrounds.

Park visitors can climb to the top of a stone watchtower built by the CCC and enjoy sweeping panoramic views of the river valley beyond.
Cave, Tower, and Wash Pond Trails Loop is an easy, 1.4-mile hike that almost anyone can do, and it hits all the high points of this hidden Central Texas gem.
The loop features an elevation gain of just over 100 feet, so rather than using all your energy on an uphill trek, you'll get to stay fully present to admire the sights.
Shade is an ever-present blessing along the trail, which you'll definitely appreciate in the warmer months. The further you trek into the heavily forested landscape, the more reminiscent of a fairytale it becomes, with wooden footbridges and trees whose gnarled branches snake all across the ground.
At some point, you'll begin to hear the faint trickle of running water emanating from deep within the woodland terrain.
