The home was originally owned by Jeremiah Lexer, shown here with his family. He was a well-known Tennessee transplant who hid a debilitating mental illness. It is said that he was schizophrenic and bipolar, a murderous cocktail that the grandfather of three couldn't fight for long.
On the morning of July 5th, 1902, Jeremiah used a freshly sharpened ax to murder his family in their beds. He then threw himself from the top window to his death. Police records indicate that they believed his time of death was roughly 3:25 am.

The murders were investigated by the Hamblen County Sheriff, who was quoted saying, " Seeing so much gruesome torture and murder to innocent life was truly sickening. I vomited and had to go outside to regain my composure."
