This 8-Mile River Leads Paddlers To The Most Spectacular Fall Foliage In Tennessee

Fall typically ushers in cooler temperatures, but that isn’t always the case here in Tennessee. I’m not one to complain; I love how we get to enjoy the colors of fall *and* still experience the warm sun during the day. So when it comes to leaf peeping in Tennessee, why not take a trip down a river in a kayak? This is how we do it here in the South! The Wolf River in La Grange, TN, offers some of the best places to paddle while witnessing some rather unique beauty here in our state.
The Wolf River is a large river spanning from Mississippi and winding its way through Tennessee all the way to the Mississippi River in Memphis. The entire body of water is breathtakingly beautiful, but the section I want to focus on today is an eight-mile section known as the Ghost River.
The Ghost River got its name because the current seems to completely disappear, and what you are left with is a mirroring body of water that reflects the dense cypress trees. This peaceful and calm place gives way to incredible views of these otherworldly trees that's truly something special.
Even if you don’t plan a trip during the peak fall foliage, you will still be rewarded with a stunning scene that is both tranquil and quiet. Paddling your way through the calm waters can be lots of fun as you maneuver your way around the fallen trees and thick sections.
If you do, however, make the trip in the fall you will be rewarded with an incredible display of fiery colors. Imagine gliding across the reflective water with floating leaves of gold drifting by like water lanterns. The mirror effect on the water gives an expansive look at the vibrant colors in the trees above.
If you prefer to plan a trip on solid ground, there is a nearby trail where you can hike the boardwalk to witness a similar scene. The Ghost River Mineral Slough Boardwalk is the name of the trail, and make sure you check out the AllTrails map to keep track of your hike.
Both options are truly beautiful, but I advise that if you are unfamiliar with the river, to please not attempt this trip alone. There are plenty of options when it comes to group trips like the Wolf River Conservancy or Blue City Kayaks. Both of these options are will get you outfitted with all the gear and equipment you need for a safe adventure on this beauteous body of water.
The Wolf River in La Grange, TN, is among one of the most unique places to explore in the state. It is perfect for a fall adventure, but is wonderful all year round as each season gives way to a whole different scene.
