This beautiful lake is located on the western side of the state, and it’s the only naturally formed lake in the heart of Tennessee. Thanks to our fabulous TVA initiative we have a state that’s speckled with gorgeous watery expanses, but this gorgeous lake has a special spot in our hearts. If you haven’t been to Reelfoot Lake yet? Then you’re about to be a convert.
Reelfoot Lake was formed by a series of earthquakes in the early 19th century known as the New Madrid Earthquakes. A series of quakes rocked the state from 1811 to 1812, and although it caused a solid amount of destruction, there was also a form of rejuvenation in the beautiful creation of Reelfoot Lake.
How did that happen, you ask? Well, the quakes were so intense that they caused the great Mississippi to flow BACKWARDS, where it flooded the nearby cypress forest. Nowadays, Reelfoot Lake is one of the only naturally formed lakes in the state.

The ecosystem is known for being biodiverse, with an incredible number of local plants and wildlife rounding out this gorgeous Tennessee experience.
