The Cherohala Skyway is one of the most popular spots for locals to meander during the warmer months and colorful season of autumn, and we know exactly why. Check it out below!
The Cherohala Skyway is a 43-mile National Scenic Byway that stretches from Tellico Plains, Tennessee to Robbinsville, North Carolina. Although it traverses a historic route, the road was finished in the autumn of 1996.
The Skyway boasts incredible views from over 5,400 feet high. Twenty-three miles wind their way through the lushly forested heart of eastern Tennessee and descends into the beauty of western North Carolina.

The views are stunning all year, but we'd recommend visiting during the warmer months. The road tends to ice over in the winter, making for unsafe driving conditions. Driving at night is also discouraged.

Where did the name "Cherohala Skyway" come from? The road itself crosses through both Cherokee and Nantahala National Forests, and "Cherohala" is a combination of both titles.
Make sure you start out on your drive with plenty of gas! The drive along the Cherohala Skyway tends to be isolated, with no gas stations or facilities other than public restrooms along the National Scenic Byway. The isolation is beautiful, but it's something to plan for, especially if you have younger passengers.
The Skyway was named one of the "Top 10 Motorcycle Rides In North America" by the Discovery Channel and remains one of the most popular drives in the state of Tennessee.
