The Biggest And Baddest Ski Slope In The Country Is Right Here In Wyoming And It’s Not For The Faint Of Heart
Jackson Hole Mountain Resort in Wyoming offers the longest vertical drop in the U.S. and is known for its challenging ski runs, including the infamous Corbet's Couloir.
With acres of mountain ranges and some of the longest winters outside of the North and South poles, Wyoming is a skier's paradise. Whatever your skill level, from beginner to expert, we have a mountain to match, but when you're in the mood for a challenge with a side of adrenaline, you'll want to head for Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. It has the distinction of being the home of the vertical drop with the most continuous feet in the U.S. - and it's not for the faint of heart.
Nature carved out the longest vertical drop in the country right inside the 2,500 acres of challenging terrain at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort.
There are over 130 ski runs at Jackson Hole with half of them being rated as expert trails.
Called Corbet's Couloir for the mountaineer who first spotted the vertigo-inducing drop, it boasts 4,139 vertical (and continuous) feet and has been called the scariest ski slope in America.
Pictures can't do Corbet's justice. People who have seen it say the drop is so much bigger in real life than it looks in photos or even on video. Take a look and see:
The gondola will ferry you up to the dizzying summit, giving spectacular views of the stunning Wyoming landscape along the way.
The base elevation at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is 6,311, and the elevation at the summit is 10,450.
As you approach Corbet's Couloir, you'll see that the brink is partially cordoned off and dotted with warning signs.
It is, after all, the edge of a cliff.
The minimal wire barrier and signage doesn't keep thrill-seekers and fascinated gawkers from the edge of the perilous precipice, however.
Not everyone who takes the tram to Corbet's Couloir intends on skiing it. Many are there just to experience looking into the abyss and to watch other more daring souls take the leap.
Those who do rise to the challenge just have to take a deep breath...
...and jump in.
If you can manage to hit just right, you should be able to make it down in one piece. Some amaze even themselves at how gracefully they ski Jackson Hole's legendary vertical drop.
Unfortunately, not everyone gets in the groove...
...and they end up taking the hard way down the hill...
...with only a face full of snow to show for their efforts - if they're lucky.
Whether you just ski to the edge or go all-in and take the plunge, Corbet's Couloir at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort delivers an unparalleled rush you won't get anywhere else.
