4 Surprising Airbnbs Hiding on Washington’s Vashon Island
If you're looking to slow things down for a while, there's no better place than Washington's Vashon Island.
I've never been more grateful to live in the Pacific Northwest than I have been lately. Between the peaks of spring, the rare breaks in the rain, and the incredible people, it's easy to fall in love with Washington. Even so, some days call for a getaway — not far, of course. Where else could be better? For my next escape, I think I'd head to Vashon Island. Just an hour from Seattle, this peaceful enclave is my favorite place to slow down and breathe deep.
These four magical rentals on Vashon are the perfect spots to soak in the quiet charm of the Sound.
1. The Forested Burrow
Nestled in the heart of Vashon Island, this impeccably designed tiny home is perfect for couples or singletons seeking woodsy serenity. Wake early to mist-covered trails, vet the delicious eateries nearby, and hunt down the perfect cup of coffee — though host Dawn provides guests with locally roasted beans in the kitchenette.
Close your day of adventure with a dip in the wood-fired soaking tub, then retreat to the loft, where a plush double bed awaits. As you drift off, the skylight above offers a glittering view of the stars and then welcomes the morning light to start a new day.
2. The Waterfront Paradise
What's the point of visiting an island if not to enjoy the dazzling water? If traveling with family and pets, I can't think of a better retreat than this two-bedroom cottage perched on the shores of Quartermaster Harbor.
Work up an appetite by beach-combing along Burton Peninsula or exploring the trails that lace through Jensen Point Park. At your home-away-from-home, prepare a hearty meal in the well-appointed kitchen. You'll need it to fuel the next day's adventures — whether that means paddling out on the provided kayaks and paddleboards or simply basking in the sun as the tide rolls right up to the deck.
3. The Artist's Muse
In Airbnb's early days, part of its allure was playing house in someone else's home. The Storybook Cabin brings that charm back. It is chock full of personality, built and furnished with love.
Though life's hustle and bustle will seem distant from the dreamy property outside, guests are close enough to town to acquaint themselves with Vashon's thriving artistic scene. Its three snug beds make it a fit for small families, but for creatives seeking inspiration by the glow of an outdoor firepit, this is the perfect escape.
4. The Lighthouse Keeper's Quarters
If you're a history buff pining for sweeping views of the Sound, Vashon Island's lighthouse station offers a stay unlike any other. Just steps from the iconic Point Robinson Lighthouse, the Keepers' Quarters offer travelers something close to time travel, immersing them in the solitude and charm of maritime life in the Victorian Era.
When you've pulled yourself away from the living room window's shoreline views, you'll find plenty to occupy you. Explore the breathtaking setting, man a supply run into town, or break away to read on one of the home's three comfortable beds. This is history, serenity, and adventure all in one unforgettable stay.
I can't think of a better place to soak in the best of what western Washington has to offer than Vashon. Whether you're traveling solo, as a couple, with family, or in a group, these Airbnbs are just a taste of the island's breathtaking accommodations. The only question is where you see yourself making memories you'll treasure forever.
