You’ll Never Forget An Overnight In This Retired Caboose In Virginia

Virginia has no shortage of unique accommodations. From noteworthy resorts to charming bed and breakfasts, you can always find a place to get away from it all. Especially when that place happens to be a retired, authentic train caboose. An overnight in this train car may not take you anywhere, but you won't forget your stay anytime soon. Just outside of the beautiful town of Natural Bridge sits one of the most unique accommodations in the entire state. Not only will guests get the opportunity to see an authentic, renovated 1926 model caboose; they’ll also get the chance to stay overnight.

The car was once part of the Chesapeake & Ohio line, a railway established in 1869 in Virginia as a combination of other smaller lines. The line stretched from Richmond all the way to the Ohio River. The C&O railway ran until 1971, with the founding of Amtrak. Today, the only remaining line is called the Cardinal, an especially scenic route that runs through the New River Gorge.

A man by the name of Tom Bradshaw came across one of the line’s antique cars, dating back to 1926, and had a vision of restoration. After much dedicated study and handiwork Bradshaw was able to restore and refurbish the caboose into something extraordinary. The car, appearing now as it would have in the 1930s, is complete with cherry floors, red cedar walls, and the original wood ceiling.

Although the caboose itself is only 200 square feet inside, it’ll make a cozy and charming accommodation for a couple or small family. The bedroom features a double captains bed, which was made by Ohio Amish craftsman. There’s also a shower and kitchen area, complete with a stove, small fridge and microwave. A small daybed also pulls out in the central area, perfectly sized for small children.

The outdoor area is equally charming, with an impressive brick patio, fire pit, and gas grill for cookouts. Whether you’re staying for just a night or a long weekend, you’re in for a wonderfully unique overnight in this vintage train car.
