Virginia is chock-full of historic landmarks that have existed for decades, and in some cases, even centuries. One such example is the Exchange Hotel Civil War Medical Museum in Gordonsville, Virginia. Built just a few years before the Civil War, the landmark has seen its fair share of history and throughout its lifetime has served as a hotel, hospital, saloon, school, and museum. Those who visit today will get a firsthand look at the hotel’s history — and perhaps even some hauntings. Here’s more on the fascinating story behind the Exchange Hotel:
Built in 1860, the Exchange Hotel was once situated along an important railroad junction for those traveling along the Virginia Central Railroad. The hotel offered a place of rest for weary travelers.
Yet it wasn’t long before the Civil War brought about major demands for hospitals, and the Exchange Hotel was soon transformed into one.
In just one year’s time, the Gordonsville Receiving Hospital is said to have admitted over 23,000 sick and wounded individuals. By the end of the war, the hospital treated over 70,000 and 700 were buried on the grounds.
In 1973, the hotel was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, the landmark houses an array of Civil War artifacts and medical equipment. Yet many people visit in hopes of experiencing something paranormal.
For decades, this site has been believed to be haunted, and it’s really no mystery why. Perhaps the souls who suffered and lost their lives might still be wandering the halls of this former hospital.
Unexplained voices, items moving on their own, apparitions, and other unexplainable sightings have convinced many that this place is riddled with paranormal activity.
Whether you believe this to be the case or not, you won’t help but become intrigued by the history of the building and its countless alleged hauntings.
