First Time Camper? This Accessible Campground in Virginia Will Make You a Camping Convert
A magical campground right along the James River promises to turn you into a camping enthusiast.
Camping is one of those experiences that's endlessly rewarding, but it can also be a bit intimidating. Whether you're new to the experience or just don't consider yourself outdoors-y, you may feel discouraged by the idea. Fortunately, Virginia has so many wonderful, easy-to-access campsites that even the most intimidated campers will quickly feel like pros. One that's recently caught my eye is the James River Depot. With just a handful of spacious sites, this pristine camping destination will immediately feel like a home-away-from-home.
The James River Depot is a positively stunning campground located just an hour south of the Rockfish Gap entrance of Shenandoah National Park. But, unlike some of the national park's campgrounds, this one is totally private, giving you the much-sought-after feeling of being completely secluded in the mountains. The campground is small, with only five sites available, but this adds to its charm. Plus, you'll have reserved your spot beforehand, so there's no stressing over an over-booked campground. In 2023, the campground was named among the best in Virginia by HipCamp, and it's not difficult to see why.
So what makes this campground so spectacular? Well, to start, it's tucked away on a picturesque hayfield between the James River and a historic railroad. During the day, campers are invited to access the river right from the property to enjoy a relaxing float trip. As you're gliding down the James, you'll likely even hear a train passing. There are actually trains that run through the day and night, and they give a whistle when approaching. Otherwise, the campground is peaceful and a wonderful place to unwind and connect to nature.
The James River Depot is loved by all campers, from novices to pros. You'll find set-up to be a breeze. When arriving, look for the sign that reads "James River Trail" and follow the narrow road over the tracks and through the hayfield to your spot. All five of the campsites are located along the river, and firewood is available at $10 per load. Currently, RVs are not permitted here due to zoning restrictions.
Each evening, the night sky comes alive with vibrant twinkling stars. With so little light pollution in the area, the night sky will seem that much closer. After a peaceful night of sleep, you'll awake feeling refreshed and ready to take on a whole day filled with mountain adventures. In addition to Shenandoah National Park, Natural Bridge State Park and the famous Devil's Marbleyard Trail are just a short drive away.
A few other things to note about this campground: dogs are allowed, but the hosts request that you keep them nearby at all times. A maximum of six guests is allowed per site (and two dogs max). Campground amenities include a picnic table, fire pit, and portable toilet (not available during winter months). As for cooking, there is a two-and-a-half-foot-tall metal grate available that can be set up over campfires for slower cooking. Everything that you pack in, you'll need to pack out.
